    Any Cam Disappointments

Not looking for those looking to dog a particular make of cam or provider/vendor.

Looking for those who purchased a cam and after they ran it a few times, although they noticed an increase of HP & TQ they didn't feel like what they had gotten their hopes up for?

What would you wish you would have went with differently or added with the cam.

I know its all subjective without numbers but not many people take it to track or dynos. Some are expecting miracles from little but its all an opinion.

Not too many have tried multiple types of aftermarket cams yet so only a few people on here can really say cam A is stronger than Cam B. They all look good when compaired to the stock 5.7 cam. Something else to consider is that a cam is almost some type of compromise. Top end for torque, fast rates vs valve train life and in the end with the limits of valve springs and valve to piston clearance most of the cams we can physically use are not that different. The cams going in stock block settups can't really deviate that much and still work.

    Any Cam Disappointments?

Well, I wish his dual intake was ready for production, I wish it was built for the 5.7, I wish he hadn't had to take that second job as an elf... the list goes on and on...

    oh, wait, I see... nevermind.

I did change the rods, and I have the same annoying sewing machine sound under the hood. Haven't changed the springs yet though, maybe that will help? It's the nature of the beast I'v been told. I thought I did something wronge initially, but everything appears to be A-OK, just noisy. I love the new power though and I have a COMP 260.

There nothing worng with the 260. With good heads, it makes decent power. Trojan ditched his 402 push rods and went with the 6.1 and still has a fair amount of noise, not as much, but it's still there.

Before I lost the motor, I had had both a 6.1 cam and an early a Tomahawk installed in my 5.7 stock lower end. Both ran with FRI S&S heads, short tubes, high flow cats, a cat back, an AirHammer, B&G tune, converter... you get the idea.

The 6.1 absolutely sucked off the line. With it installed I was actually slower off the line than a bone stock 5.7. But, get past 3500k RPM and it absolutely dominated. My 1/4 mile times didn't decrease simply because everything it lost off the line, it made up at the top end. The problem was, though, I spend all my time at sub 80mph and at part throttle doing daily driver duties. The 6.1 sucked for this job.

Now I only had the Tomahawk installed for 48 hours, but wow what an incredible 48 hours. Once the B&G learned what was what, I fell in love. The thing was a torque monster.

See here for a comparison of the two cams (in fairness, the heads were reworked a bit between these two runs and we replaced the short tube headers with long tubes, but IMHO 90% of the difference is in the cam.

I initially bought the crane 216 due to it's advertized MDS compatable lift of .550"

It turns out that Crane uses 1.7 rocker ratio to compute the advertized lift where most others use a 1.6 or the correct 1.65:1. The actual lift @ 1.65:1 is .534"

I was a bit disappointed @ first, but W/the 112* LSA the cam has a wide, high reving power band. The slight torque loss off the line has been remedied W/better gearing & I think W/some minor tweaking this cam or a similar LSA/duration cam W/a bit more lift, when coupled W/the Mopar Performance 5.7 heads @ a bit more CR via milling will eventually top 450 RWHP in a N/A 5.7 while retaining MDS.

The people @ promotion Tuning also commented on how quiet my engine was compared to other "cammed" 5.7s. I am using 6.1 pushrods.

So yeah, I was disappointed @ first but now I am perfectly happy W/the Crane 216.

426 RWHP/460 RWTQ on motor, 555 RWHP on a 150 shot of juice
    12.062 @ 113.97 on motor, 11.306 @ 121.87 on a 125 HP shot
Stock 5.7 rotating assembly, still MDS enabled

Im pretty sure the THawk is MDS friendly, FRI street heads would be fine.
The THawk is a stump puller, As far as Cam observations, The Comp 260 was great, Nice curve from top to bottom, My littleboy lacked a bit on the bottom
and a small retard would have prolly fixed that. The HHP Stg 3 I'm running now is pretty sick! pulls hard except the tip top but again I think thats just a small tuning tweak. What Ive learned is once you have a goal for the car then you choose the Cam accordinly.

As Far as Cam disappointments, He hasn't ever disappointed me.......

Would the Tomahawk or the sidewinder give me more low end torque? Having an AWD, I have no problem with spinning tires, and want the most low end I can possibly get, especially since my local track is only an 1/8th of a mile long.
