another cool air quest thread, take a look though!

a qiuck run down, 2007 RT charger, eqiuped with hhp catless mids, magnaflow catback, AFE stage2 and diablo.

was browsing my local pepboys and saw some memory accordian like cool air vent tube for 18.99, i bought it and it sat in my trunk for a few weeks until i got bored which was today. i bought the tube to run through the hole in the front end to the front of the bumper. well today i saw another way that would be just as effective. i was gonna remove the grill and drill a hole large enough for the tube in the air duct thats made to direct air to the radiator and channel the tube beside the headlight right to the filter. the heat shield imo does a decent job of blocking heat with the afe stage2, it seals nicely with the hood and creates a nice pocket (still not sealed but does a decent job blocking heat) but sometimes its hard for the filter to see fresh cool air.

so to test my theroy, i took my fathers digital thermo. that he uses to test for leaky or drafty windows.(long story when we bought a new house) but as i confirmed placing the sensor looslely within the afe heat shield and got my reading of 102.2 degrees. while just cruising (no WOT pass's)

well i went ahead and did it, it came out pretty clean and nice. what i also did was use black duct tape to help seal all the small posible cracks and crevis to completely seal off any chance of engine bay air temp in and cooler intake air out. i also removed the piece on the very bottom of the radiator shround on the intake side as per XE ryder suggested to let fresh air hit that hole in the front end where the stock intake collects from.

then using the same thermo i used before i went at it again, same stretch of road, same temps outside (this mod only took about 30 min) and low and behold, the thermo read 83.8 degrees.outside temp was 74 degrees, humidity was 47%.

not bad for 30 minutes of my time and some 20 dollar 3inch memory flexable tubing. tommarow i plan on going the hardware store and automotive store to buy some nice weather striping with adheasive to replace the duct tape i used so it looks better for when i take pics for you guys tommarow. i also plan on drilling another 3 inch hole in the radiator duct right above the current hole i made and run a second tube to the filter. the hole i drilled is on the part of the plastic piece that doesnt direct air to the radiator, so the rad. duct is still 100% functional.

i still may use PVC or the rest of the tubing to place through the hole in the front end where the stock air box gets its air from but not sure yet, at this point i am willing to bet it will make no difference. in colclusion i fell this is a great cheap mod for those with the under the hood "cai" setups

i have this weekend free so i may play around with air box and some pvc ducting like NOMADS setup from ahwile back. i have a K/N panel filter for that airbox as well...

    happy moding!!!!!

also i forgot to mention, on the highway it was hard to tell if i noticed any seat difference, but the fact is, the " heat shield cubby" was considerably cooler and that to me is a big difference when it comes to timing being pulled!

Just make sure you don't funnel water into your air filter when it rains hard. You might fit a K&N Drycharger cover over your filter, just to be safe.

    More air

My AFE did a crappy job of isolation from the engine bay. There is a 2" gap between the bottom heat shield with the hole in it and the hole.
I cut some dense foam from a fabric shop and sealed the air leaks from the engine bay.

With the filter out, the mag has a 5"X8"" hole facing the grill, that's covered with the radiator air ducting. I also opened that hole to allow air to enter the now sealed air box.

No rain makes it back that far, but what do I know, living on the Left Coast. Can't remember the last rain.

I haven't noticed any performance gain, but if I pull off the freeway, and pop the hood, the filter is cool. Prior to this, it was hot, due to the heat from the rad. migrating over there.
I still get a round dirt mark on the bottom of the filter, indicating allot of air comes up that hole.

hey guys, sorry no pics yet, i didnt get to mess with it today, but hals mag thanks for the great idea, a local fabric store carries black dense foam too i can use!!!!

i have the same results, the filter is very cool to the touch after a nice hard pull now were as before it was warm to hot after the same type of pull. but you have to remember that AFE has gone through 3 different heat shield designs since they came out. the new design was made and released when they came out with a new tube that doesnt rub on the hood, and while my afe heatshield does sit about an inch over that same hole, it still seals of the rest of the bay fairly well. and with some black duct tape i was able to make it seal perfect, didnt look ghetto either as i took my time and made it look very nice.

did you use tube or just make the hole hal? i used tube because it appeard more air when vented would hit the filter better then without the tubing.

    Front hole

I never got around to using a tube.

Thanks for the tip on black duct tape. The foam cut easily with a electric carving knife, or my fish fillet knife.
My primary concern was the area below the AFE shield that opened to the engine bay.

I thought about heat shielding the coolant and P/S reservoir, but never got around to it.

I also removed my brake reservoir cover, and large engine bottom panel to allow heat to escape from the engine bay.

It never rains in Southern California!
