Almost stall when shifting from Reverse to Drive

When I shift the car from Reverse into Drive, I have always had to wait a second before giving it gas because the car would stall a bit. However lately, I have noticed now that when I shift from reverse into drive, I need to wait for about 3 seconds before giving it gas or the idle starts to drop low. It seems that the wait time is getting worse and worse, and today the idle dropped below 500 rpms and the car almost stalled out. Any ideas on if this is a tuning issue or if this is common with cars that have cams installed?

It sounds like tuning issues to me. Tell your tunner about it and he should be able to fix it. You also might want to just bump up the idle a little bit too.

I had and still have the delayed change fro R to D and from D to R.
Took my car in the have it checked out, the dealer checked for fault codes and drove the car.
Bottom line is that these gearboxes for the 5.7 and 6.1's have a built in delay, presumably to protect it and extend life, it also prevents slamming into D from N and flooring it so it is effective in this sense, however still irritating.
I received some responses when I posted about this on the SRT8 forum and all had the smae issue and it is normal for a small delay.
The extended delay you seem to be having now should then be tune related.
    Goodluck!

Yea it almost seems to only do it in the morning, when i back out of my driveway, then put it in D to drive to work. Car shakes, idle drops, almost stalls. I have to put it in D, hold the break for 3 secs, then go. I noticed it before, just seems more pronouced. Ill wait for Lafrad to get back to me and see what he says

I have had 3 tunes and the only one currently that is drivable in somewhat of a safe manner is the one with the highest idle whether in gear or park or switching.
By all means it doesn't run right, it just doesn't stall. It idles around 900 and if your foot is off the brake it will idle to at least 25-40mph. So you are constantly burning break pad

You could help some of it with a refined tune where the RPMs are dropping too much...but there is a delay normally and it can be dangerous!! I hate it lol.

Mine staggered quite a bit initially, set for 750 rpm and wanted to stall (and did, several times), going from P or D to R etc etc, as well as staggering hard when pulling briskly up to a stop sign, and stalling several times there too.

I bumped the idle up 50 (to 800) and between that and it learning better (adaptives) it got way more civilized. I put it back to 750 tonight, we'll see what it does when it's cold in the morning. I wonder if there is an adaptive process for 'cold start'? It's not done very much compared to regular driving...

I agree that tuning is the key, because it sure didn't act like this stock or with the sc.

Mine did this and stalled when stopping also. It quit when I got a good e-mail tune. My idle is smooth at 750 at any temp.

Well my car doesnt stall, which is good. Never has. I do notice that when my car is cold and I start up, it idles around 1000 for about 20 seconds, then it drops to 750 and holds there good. Again this only happens on a cold start. I have never noticed my idle drop below 750 ever, except when shifting from R to D. It still hasnt stalled yet while doing that, but it seems to me it is getting worse so maybe one day it might. We shall see.

I have noticed that my car wants to "go" more when I am crusing during traffic without the gas pedal pressed. Almost seems like with the tune, it is still getting a little gas. I do have to use the brake alot more and brake harder when coming to a stop than I did before when it was stock

I have seen that alot when your fuel trims are out to lunch in that range, it can be fixed via a tune. Just need to log your long term trims during that event.

is that regarding the "wanting to go" around the lower rpms?
around 15-1700 my car keeps getting a little fuel as i slow down, and its right at the speed of "slow coast" in traffic and it wants to surge forward over and over.

im going to be back in the shop for more tuning soon and need to know what to have them look into.

    thanks!
