    aftermarket exhaust sound

WIth the MDS system on the HEMI V8, what will an exhaust system sound like? I read the road/track edition of the 300C and it said how tough it was to develop an exhaust system for the engine becuase it switches FROM 8 cylinders to 4. Do you think a regular bolt on muffler will sound good or will a special tuned muffler have to be purchased to get a consistant sound. What i imagine is a deep truck exhaust when u floor it, and a ricer note when cruising on the freeway, im probably wrong though.... I hope.

I have read on other forms that they removed the back resonators which improved the sound. I am going to wait until flowmaster or borla comes out with a system. DC spent a lot of time on the exaust to make sure it is quiet in both modes and I think it will be hard to make a change.

I am going to wait and see.

DC spent a lot of time tuning the exhaust so you couldn't hear the difference when the engine goes INTO 4 cyl mode...

I think one of the biggest factors as to why its hard to hear the difference FROM 4 cyl and 8 cyl mode is the X pipe in the system, it really balances the exhaust pulses FROM both sides of the engine.

Several people on this site have upgraded the exhaust, and the clips I heard sound awesome, they said you can't really tell when it changes modes...

Same here...they would be in tomorrow but K&N has the car until friday so they will go in that day. I was most impressed with the Spin Techs sound and technology wasn't so bad either.

Flux...are you doing the 18" glasspacks too in place of the big resonator? I'm basically going with exactly what KENTC did.

    Resonator

    Hey,
Borla has already made a cat back system for the Magnum. The downside is that it's more than $900. A lot to spend on a brand new car. I took my car to the local muffler shop yesterday and we looked at some options. The best (and simplest) answer was to remove the suitcase sized resonator, after the x-pipe, and leave the rear mufflers in place. 45 minutes and $85 later the car sounds AWESOME! I drove about 300 miles this morning and couldn't tell (from the exhaust note) when the MDS kicked in. At idle, the car sounds almost exactly like before (quiet enough to have an easy conversation at the back of the car). Once you step on the gas... look out. It sounds WONDERFUL. The best part is, I haven't made any changes that can't be undone easily. In short, sound is improved, mileage improved, low cost. My recommendation; eliminate the resonator.

Dave - how about the "drone" sound that has happened to so many home grown systems? At highway speeds, somewhere between 55-75, lots of these have that darned resonance. Please try to be fair, your level of tolerance may be different FROM some of us. My ears are 50+, but I like a sound at WOT, not at cruise! Thanks!

    Drone

I have to be honest with everyone, the engine is louder than it was before and I can hear it on the hihgway. I don't think the sound is loud enough to interfere with conversations, radio, etc. I have the Uconnect and don't have any challenges with outside noise when I'm on the phone. The drone of this engine doesn't seem to be loud enough or in a pitch that I find annoying. I will be putting about 1200 miles on the car in the next few days, I'll let you know how I like it after that long a drive. I'm thinking that perhaps a pair of flowmasters (or similar) might be added in place of the factory "suitcase." All I can say is try it, you might like it!

I got my 05 Magnum on Tues. and on Wed. i went to a local muffler shop and cut the exhaust off i took the big muffler off in the middle and replaced it with 2 magnaflow mufflers and had all new piping done all the way to the back cut off the other 2 whatever you call them and REPLACE them with 3.5" magnaflow tips. The car sounds roudy i would tell anyone that asks me about it to do it. I have gotten nothing but complemints about the sound. It sounds like a sports car big time. On the highway there quite, Trust me its worth it.

How is the sound inside? I'm looking at making my RT sound better without making it too loud inside the magnum. THanks in advance.

If you are concerned about noise inside go with the Borla system. Easy bolt on mod. Sounds just a bit louder(about 1.5 dB by their site) than stock unless you get on it then it wakes up. No noise at highway speeds.

I went with the Aero Turbines but there is a rumble at highway speeds. Not really a drone but a rumble.
