    180 T stat mod question

    I installed a Motorad 180 degree t-stat part number 332-180 today on my 05 Magnum 5.7 hemi
and saw no noticeable change in the temp reading from the gage.
I did a test drive around the block and down the street a copula of times and still no change.
Question do I need a fan mod to make this work?

    Cheers

No you don't need a fan mod... running down the highway with my MSRT8 6.1L the coolant temperature rides right on 185-186. If you are looking at the oil temperature in the SYSTEM INFO menu of the EVIC you're looking at the oil temperature, not the coolant. That will be effected very little by the Tstat mod.

To see the engine temperature (coolant) you have to go to diagnostic mode (menu and music buttons held simultaneously for 7-10 secs) then cycle through until you see engine temp.

And in the other camp, YES you do need a fan mod. If you are unable to get any sustained highway speeds, like in city traffic, your temps will quickly rise over the 200° mark. Also if you plan to do any drag racing, the only way to keep your temps down in the staging lanes is to have the fans running.

your car will still get up to about 200 under normal conditions (guage will be dead center)....you will see 185-6 when you are on the highway and air is flowing nicely through rad. around town your fans are not coming on even though the coolant is running through t-stat....run the car on the highway for about 5 minutes and you should see your guage skewed to the left a little instead of dead center and that's about 185....use evic to see exact readings. You'll need fan mod to stay at 185 around town.

YUP, you need a fan mod to see cooler temps driving in city traffic. You will only see lower temps when you are on the highway with just the 180 thermostat.

For highway driving, or constant flow of traffic the t-stat alone is fine. But once you've come to a stop for a few minutes (traffic light) or are in any traffic preventing you from getting any good airflow through the grille you WILL certainly need a fan mod.

I am running both. I did the fan mod 2 weeks after my T-stat (was awaiting parts) and I found the above scenario I listed to be true. Now that I have my fan mod i would never look back. I use it often.

I chose the GSM fan/ESP mod because I wanted the switch out of the way, no rat's nest of wiring in my fusebox (like other fan mods) and wanted to eliminate torque management at the same time. There is also the much heralded NoESP mod (in vendors forum).

So did you find the engine temperature reading in the EVIC?

And just for the record, I agree that a fan mod will keep engine temp down in slow/city/stop/go traffic. But is it necesary? No. The Tstat doesn't change the stock function of the fans as they sit. The stock set-up will keep the engine temp under OEM control temps, just maybe not as cool as you might like it.

Remember, the difference between 200+ and 185 is less than a needle widths on the analog gauge. Might be hard to see....

Yes, you need the fan mod, I had the 180 for 6 months with no fan mod and after driving for a while it would still run all the way to 217, but with the fan mod, it will not go higher than 194, runs 188-190.
