    SWI-JACK Only Recognizes Volume Buttons

I just put in a new HU and used the C2R-CHY, SWI-CAN, and SWI-JACK. Everything works fine, programmed the SWI-JACK to work with the steering wheel buttons, but it just plain doesn't recognize any buttons other than + and -.

Is this by design? Anyone run into this?

I would like it to recognize the up, down, and right-pointing triangle buttons, and the musical note button. But during the programming procedure, the SWI-JACK LED does not come on when these buttons are pressed.

Yes. It sounds like you're familiar with the programming procedure. You press the recessed button on the SWI, the LED comes on. Then you press and hold a steering wheel button til the LED goes out. Then you release the steering wheel button and the LED comes back on and you repeat the procedure for the next steering wheel button, etc. The only two steering wheel buttons which cause the LED to go on and off are the + and -.

Are you skipping the steps that are not needed / used?

    problems

I had the same problem at first. I had an older model unit, I called up pac and got a newer verison of the same part. I forget which one it was but if you call them they are very helpful.

Yes, I'm following the skip procedure. But it is really irrelevant to the wheel button side. The SWI-JACK programming procedure is a mapping procedure. The HU side is fixed, and that's why you have to stick to the exact sequence listed. But the wheel button side is interactive - that's why the SWI-JACK waits for wheel button pushes: It has to "remember" which buttons the user would like to do which things on the HU. If I wanted to, I could map the "+" wheel button to "volume down" on the JVC, and the "-" wheel button to volume up, merely by reversing the programming sequence for those two buttons. The point is, the SWI-JACK does not detect a wheel button push for any wheel button except those two buttons.

I would like to hear from anyone who is using the C2R-CHY/SWI-CAN/SWI-JACK combination whose setup DOES work with the wheel buttons on the left side of the steering wheel. If there is anyone, that is.

Yes, I understand all that; it does not care which steering wheel button you assign to what. What I was referring to was the manual that tells you "skip all other steps", but I guess if you got 2 buttons to work, then I would assume you did.

Sorry, I can sense your frustration, and I was just trying to help. Good luck.

Not all that frustrated - sorry if it came through that way. I just know that whatever is posted here can be a real help for people months or years hence, so I like to include as much info in a post that I can. I appreciate the help. It'll get worked out I'm sure.

Yeah. They said it might be a defective SWI-CAN module.

I figured it out, it was user error. This is going to sound obvious, but somehow it escaped me, at first.

The radio has to be turned on for the SWI modules to recognize all of the steering wheel buttons.

I actually found this buried in PAC's instructions. I guess what threw me was, the radio does NOT have to be turned on for the SWI to recognize the volume buttons. So, somehow the radio was turned off at first, I began to program and it was working as advertised with the volume buttons but then quit. Since it was "kinda working" it didn't occur to me that there may be a problem with the radio not being on.

Anyway, all fixed up now and I really like the head unit, JVC KW-AVX800.

also anyone having similar issues just have the shop you buy the part from to program the SWI module ahead of time. I just recieved a programmer at work for these pieces so they can be programmed before i even take anything apart in the car.
