    Parking Brake Video Lockout

I'm putting a JVC KW-AVX800 in this weekend. It has a wiring lead that's supposed to go to the "parking brake switch" to make sure video can't be watched unless the car is parked. This is all common knowledge, pretty much - based on threads here and elsewhere.

But does anyone know for sure on this model what should be done with that wiring lead, if I want to defeat the parking brake lockout? I don't plan to drive around while watching movies. But I also don't like the idea of lockouts.

Some sources say to ground the wire. Maybe? Anyone know for sure? And if I ground it and it's not supposed to be, can it hurt anything?

nope can't hurt anything... IF there is no power in the wire.. check it on a volt meter with the radio powered up before attempting to ground it, then test ground it (just touch to metal quicky) to be sure it doesn't short....

in my impala I put mine on a switch. ground the switch, wire from head unit to the switch, this way I could lock it out at will...

do a google search to see if there is any data on your head unit, I know some of them work differently than just grounding a wire...

Yes just ground that light green wire and you should be good to go.

I just read the install manual on the JVC site.

Thanks - can you humor me a little, tho? I've looked and looked at that diagram (the one that shows the parking brake switch circuit). If I take out (in my mind) the effect the radio lead has on that circuit, I understand it. The positive lead from the battery goes thru the parking brake warning light, then to the switch, and when the switch is closed, that completes the circuit and the light goes on.

But since what I know about electricity is basically based on experience with Radio Shack's 200-in-1 electronics kits, my brain fades when I try to envision how the current flows when the radio lead is added to the circuit. The radio lead is one wire, so it looks like that wire is just a tap (or am I wrong on that?) - so that lead going to the radio is like, always connected to positive, and also gets connected to ground, when the switch closes? What am I missing?

parking brake switch goes to ground when it is engaged. that's why you just have to hook the wire from that jvc up to ground because no crazy pulse is needed. that avx800 is a really nice radio too. we put one in a custom IS300 and it was nicer than i thought it would be.

When the parking brake is not engaged that wire does have voltage on it. Once you engage the parking brake, it no longer has voltage and that is when the radio will allow video to be played onto it.

So you can take that light green wire and tie it in with the black ground wire and then ground both of them and you should enjoy video at anytime...

    Thank you Bigal470

Thanks. But if that wire has voltage on it when the brake is not engaged, wouldn't the parking brake warning light be on (when the brake is not engaged)?

Look at the diagram in my post. The warning light is on that same wire.

Thanks. Are you using the SWI-JACK and SWI-CAN to continue to use your steering wheel buttons?

I am trying to, but I can only get the SWI-JACK to recognize the "+" and "-" buttons on the wheel.

I bought a Dual In-Dash DVD / etc.... For the Dash location in my motorhome, and it had a routine you had to go through with engaging and dis engaging the parking brake ( over and over in 5-10 second intervals ) Anyway, I found a guy on Ebay selling a code to dis able the lockout completely ! It was like $5.. It involved pressing and holding 3 buttons for 10 seconds, then entering a 3 digit code... It's worked for 8 months now, and the brake wire is just dangling loose.... Give it a look-see on Ebay...

Well for this unit all you have to do is ground that wire.

No codes needed or anything like the Dual items.

No extra money sent for doing it this way.
    Thank you Bigal470

Never do this because it's not a good idea for current sensitive equipment (fused or un fused). If you're confused about the function of a wire use a multi meter. Check the resistance between ground with the ohmmeter function and if it's a high resistance (>1k ohm) it's not connected to ground and then you should measure the voltage to ground with the voltmeter function.

Is there any instructions for the 2007 Dodge Charger lock out mechanism that are available for download? I need to know how to dismantle the center dash so I can replace the pink thing that holds the shifter cable. If so, please let me know. Thanks people.

this thread is not even remotely related to your request, but you can do a search on "pinky thingy" for a how to thread from Junior for what you need.
