    New Speakers Going In

I think I'm going to go with the Alpine SPS-080's for the dash and SPS 690's for the rear. From what I've read I'll just leave the doors alone for now. I'm also going to stick with the stock head unit with 6 disc changer. Anyone else have this setup? Is it much of an improvement over the stock BA's? If you can post some recommendations that I may want to consider before the install please let me know. Looking for an upgrade with sound with out going overboard with price. I can get this setup installed for under $300. Any comments or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

installed for $300------you should be able to----I know my shop would charge around $50 for the dash speakers and $40 or so for the rears.

You guys are right, I just don't have time, patience or tools to do it. My buddy owns the shop I'm taking it to and he'll cut me a deal on the package.

Is this a decent upgrade or should I splurge on a better set of speakers with the stock head unit?

$300 is a lil high for this. I think mine total was $130.00 shipped and I am a probably a lil high on that number. Fronts and rears are a snap to install and that's a professsional job soldering all contact points. It's a breeze.

I think it's high too. The guy who quoted me was just an employee and I was getting a ballpark figure. I'll probably get charged $200. It'll be cheaper if he has these actual speakers. Guess they were discontinued and Alpine came out with a replacement.

I have the same ones plus the the SPS-170A for the doors. $80 for the SPS-80A, $100 for the SPS-170A, and $120 for the SPS-690A. This was when they first came out, I was the first kid on the block with them. One word of advice, get bass blockers for the dash, I have 300hz on mine. I have the MRF-M345 75X4 on the door and rear speakers with the dash speakers powered by the HU. From my understanding the BA are still single cone(non co/tri-axials) You will hear big jump in quality.

Yes the SPS's are being replaced by the 2006 line. BUT!!, no more 3.5", the replacements are 4"!!!!!!

Isn't there a bass blocker already with the stock HU? I was under the impression the dash speakers were for all of the high frequencies and the door speakers were up to 300hz only.

Oh yeah, you have the BA system, I dont know what the cut off is, but it wont hurt anything. I have mine via the HU Xover at 220hz + the 300hz BB and got a few nasty pops when I was preping for a soundcomp, I had to fade to all the other speakers to be safe. Only the dash are on the front set.

There was a write up by Richard Clark proving that "Bass Blockers" DO NOT work----get a custom crossover(that way you know it will work)

I'm pretty sure the BA head unit has a crossover built in for the dash and door speakers. I'm going to leave the door speakers and replace the dash speakers, so the crossover should be fine. I like the imaging with the stock set up as is, so I'm thinking the upgrade in speakers will be a simple and nice quality upgrade for now.

I've always been a stickler for quality when it comes to audio. No MP3 crap, quality speakers, etc. and must say I was impressed with the stock BA system. Not bad compared to the other stock systems I've heard. Now that I've gotten acostomed to the system I can hear the limits, but all in all not a bad stock system IMO.

I like the Alpine's and I can get a good deal on them. I would have no hesitation going with some high end Polk's, Boston Acoustics, Infinity. They are all great sounding speakers. My next choice would be the Polk's though and I may still even go that route. 3.5" for the dash and 6x9's for the rear. Good luck!
