DRL enabled now I want HID's can it work?

Not certain where to post this but I was told many different things regarding if HID's will work with DRL or not. Some say the volts won't be high enough to light up the HID if using the DRL feature. Or HIDs arent' designed to do that. I have no problem disabling the DRLs with starscan but just want to know if I need to.

Any help will greatly be appreciated!

I don't think they'll light... the inverters just don't fire if the voltage is too low, similar to CCFL's. But the DRL's only use the high beams. You can still HID the lo's.

He doesn't own his RT anymore. But David, 06SilverSteel, ran a HID kit for his high beams with DRL and had 3 sets of HID running at the same time. Looked awesome. Send him a PM, he still surfs around the forum.

But I assume his DRL(High Beams HIDs) lit at "Full Brightness" and not the reduced output of the standard Halogen DRL??

Stock HIDs?? Because stock HIDs are on low beam only. The highbeam is a standard bulb. And the way the DRLs work is they are the Highbeam bulbs turn on at a reduced voltage level. So they are less bright than when they are turned on for night driving.

Is it a reduced voltage, or are these on the pulse-width business and just getting less... i dunno, pulses?

Yes, same voltage, fewer pulses. The PWM (pulse width modulation) is not adjustable though.

I stand corrected. But I am still thinking an aftermarket HID step up is going to care much for being sent a PWM reduced power signal from the DRL circuit?

I'm cutrious to know too. I would like to know what wiring is involved in enabling the drl to provide the constant appropriate voltage to power HIDs

DRL are something that isn't wired as much as it is enabled. Using a Starscan tool. You turn them on. The cars are the same as in Canada where DRL are required. So all you to do is turn this feature on. I have them turned on in my Magnum.

Another neat trick is to enable the Fog lamps to be on at ALL Times ... even while the highbeams are on. This again can be done with a Starscan and someone that knows how to use it.

A heads up if you do this ... The DRL are only on when the parking brake is off and the car is out of park. Man was I confused when I couldn't seem to get the DRLs to come ... scratching my head.

Then a few days later I pull up behind a shinny car ... and I see them on. Man did I feel silly.

Which pair of headlights do you have the HID's? On the Chargers the DRL's are the inner most pair of lights which I believe they are also the low beams.

Ok, reading above makes me have a couple of comments.....

NasaRacer is correct, DRL's are enabled thru starscan, they simply turn on the lamps when the car is in any gear but park. There is not supposed to be a voltage difference. I had 3 sets of HID's in my charger, as Freebird posted above, that actually is a pic of my car with all six burning on the waco trip. Another thing about them, all six of them burning like that are super bright!! I frequently drive to shreveport via highway 69, for those familiar, it is a lot of woods and at night it is really nice to have all that light out there. DRL's and the high beam on with fogs on will both have to be enabled by a starscan. Ran mine like that for a long time and never had an issue.

to answer firemedic's question.....if there is a voltage difference to the lamps you would have to use a relay. the drl signal would trigger the relay and the relay would supply the 12 volts to the lamps from there.

most of the HID ballasts out there have an input of 9-16 volts so you have a wide range of how much voltage you can feed them and still get the lamps to light off.
