    Can I power-up a MyGig on a test bench ?

Got my unit today, it's in great shape, no scratches (got it from eBay).

I'd love to power it up on my test bench (ahem, coffee table) before I finally get the MyGig adapter from the Canadian-hating folks who invented the thing. I found the pinouts on a Nitro forum:
    http://www.nitroforumz.com/showthread.php?t=390

... but I don't see any clear 12V+ and GND (12V-) ... and the whole CAN bus thing scares me a bit. I thought I saw one powered-up on a test bench on eBay ... but in the end the last thing I want to to is blow this thing up so I might just wait

But if anyone knows if this is possible I'm all ears !

Edit: ok I'm quite confident + is large pin 1 and - (ground) is large pin 12 on the grey connector ... but now just wondering what might happen if I just apply power and don't connect anything else...

Nothing will happen. It needs to see the CAN bus data from the vehicle before it will power up....

Do you mean in a non-MYGIG vehicle or on the work bench? The lockpick only works in a vehicle.

you just need to send it the can bus message to turn no, and you could run the audio wires out to ur home stereo if u wanted....

lol but sending the can bus msg is gonna be a pain, ur options r ur car, which obviously will not solve the problem of getting it to work on a test bench, or your other opion is to buy a canbus module like the canusb for about $200 and then plug it into ur computer and send it the "On" message.

i posted a link somewhere with the same info ill try n find it

EDIT: found it heres my post on teh 300cforums about the rec (basically the same but the canbus speed would need to be faster, which you set with the canusb device)

you could buy a can usb device, which is an adapter that reads can bus messages and sends em over a usb cord. then with a computer / laptop log and record all messages from your car while your nav starts up. then you can plug the nav info your computer and play back the recorded messages and it should start up.

or instead of just recording and playback you could get the can usb and read on CANHack.org | Help us help you gain access to your vehicles network! to find which message powers on the radio and send that one message to it using a computer and it should turn on. I know guys on that site have gotten a rec navigation system to work on a test bench, i just dont remember where on the site i read it.
can usb is about $150 US before shipping.

seems like alot of work to just get it workin on a test bench tho. where in Canada are you? I'm in Ottawa and I got a can usb coming (hopfully its in my mail box right now actually). If your in Ottawa Id be happy to plug it all in and see if it'll power on.

    EDIT: Found a thread
    http://www.canhack.org/board/viewtop...lit=bench#p822

again this might not be the best way since you gotta buy a can usb adapter and write a program to send the messages, etc. just a thought tho
all in all not really a viable solution just to "test" it

If you are in or near Ottawa tho i wouldnt mind plugging it into my canusb device and power it on since i already own one and have some code already on my laptop for this kinda thing

You need a canbus device to send it the "ON" messages. As stated above the cheapest way would be a Can USB device, I think theyre going for about $150 now.

youd also need a computer and some software to send the "ON" message.

Yeah I was reading and I seen that I needed to get that cable to connect the unit to the computer. Do I need to do any wire cutting or the cable will plug right now.

Also is the software process easy ? I really don't know much about this stuff.

My advice is if you don't know much about it, then it's probably best to not try because you may screw something up.

    yeah hskr might be right.

I had to solder together a wire harness that would plug into the car (not the radio but it work work the same just need a different plug). It was a device I bought online for bluetooth calling or something for our cars. I hacked up the wire harness and soldered in the different plugs I needed, db9 serial plug to connect to the can bus device.

Got the drivers for the can bus device working

and got software to do what I needed to do....

it was a bit challenging and since im a software engineer I had gotten some code from another member here and tailored it to what I needed it to do, which was not power on a radio out of a car so it wouldnt even help you.

youd probably have to write the code to do that, while i dont think itd be to hard, i also realize that because of my profession it makes it easier for me to do it.

anyway more work than its worth to just test a radio

When you know how, it's relatively easy to power up, especially when you already have the tools to do so. But in your case, you may as well wait for the lockpick.

I wouldn't mind buying the $150 tool, but i just don't want to buy it without knowing how its going to work. and wouldn't i need to use my car if I'm using a lockpick?
