    Adding steering wheel with Controls???

I know this has probably been answered before but I just bought a Leather steering wheel with the audio controls online. I want to add it to my SXT model that dosent have a the leather steering wheel and dot matrix cluster. I do have the nice BA stereo system with a 6 Disc tape unit installed. Can i plug and play this or do I have to have more parts and wiring harness's. I know the controls on the steering wheel also control the cluster trip and temp settings as well. Also has anyone installed a steering wheel adn if so is there a How to somewhere? Just let me know.. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

That would rock if we could get steering wheel stereo controls. I didn't realize how convenient they were until we got my wifes Honda.

I feel like I should know this answer but do not.

On a pontiac steering column that I took apart, there was one large nut that held it together. It was on the underside of the wheel. I would guess that the wires are there for the buttons since most cars run wires like that at the factory no matter what model it is, but this car has proven me wrong before.

    Good luck,

    Rob

If you don't let the clock spring rotate, you should have problem with the airbags. You don't even need to touch it if all you're doing is changing out the steering wheel. To get to a wiring harness though, you probably would need to get down in there. You'll need a couple special tools to get it all apart, they're available at autozone for the deposit rental deal... a steering wheel puller and a lock plate compressor. i couldn't tell you if the harness is there or not for sure, but i'd bet no, since lots of non uconnect cars don't have the wires and you can't upgrade to teh evic because the computer can't handle it. someone feel free to correct me on that.

Thanks for the info are there any dealers or mechanics that know for sure what I need to do or if the harness is there? I assume it is since there is a harness already going to the airbag I would assume it would be cheaper for Mopar to create one harness. I also would assume if it is there that I would have to have my car programmed to know its there.

So far Super T wins the award for the most useful info. haha I still wish we can find someone that knows 100% what we need to do to add this. I hate to start tearing my steering wheel off without knowing what to do. I have changed alot of steering wheels and do have a cheap puller but dont know if it will work on this new of a car. I still wish I knew on the steering wheel controls and the harness. I wonder since the head unit I have will work with the steering conrtols and I have teh steering wheel with the buttons could I bypass the computer and wire directly into the stereo so then i would only have music functionality? I think I need to take it to some dealers and see what they say and figure out what it would cost to have them install it.
Thanks for the help.. We might need the FUNKY CHICKEN to answer some of these questions.

I added the steering wheel today. Here is what i found out. All wiring is the same but my controls still dont work. The only difference is that the new steering wheel has a wire that is white and orange which is LIN BUS FEED which the old wheel did not.. The horn no dosent work and I cant get the conrtols to work. Do any of you guys have any suggestions? Everything just clipped in perfect. Do you think I need to get my computer flashed telling the car the controls or new BUS FEED is there? the FNKYCHKN has been PM'n me about it and answering my questions but as of now I am stuck. As for changing out the wheel that is pretty easy. You dissconnect the battery and then wait 1-2 min to let all power get out of everything. Then unbolt the two 10mm meter bolts out of the back of the wheel you will need a deep socket once that is done the airbag will come out becareful with it and unclip all wires. Then set the airbag someplace without any static. Then the hard part is unbolting the 10mm allen head that is holding the wheel on. You dont need a puller but i suggest some extra hands. It took me about an hour to get it broke loss. I eventually had to run a metal bar through the wheel so I could let that hit my knees and could hold the wheel in place then use my t-handle allen wrench with a cheater bar on it. It finally broke loose. Just dont strip the bolt. Anyway the new wheel slide on and I was ready to go but was bummed when I realized non of the buttons work. If you guys have any ideas let me know.. I funky chicken said he thinks the stereo controls should work since its ran through the CAN BUS not the EVIC. anyway I am lost unless you guys can help me. Thanks for all your help.

That is what I think too.. I have looked at the Mopar wire diagram and all the wires and colors look like they line up but now I just have the white and orange wire. Also the horn dosent work but if I push the steering wheel control buttons the horn will sometimes work. Its weird but I guess I try to talk to someone at Dodge service area.. I doubt they will know since I assume i might be one out 4 million people to want to do this so I hope I can find the answer here and then just direct them into what needs to happen. I am scared since fnckychicken cant tell me the answer.. Since he is the smartest person I have seen on the forum as of yet. We will see.
