Paging all long gunners: shoot what you got and lets see how you did! (Handgunners, click here for your match)
The idea here is to create a friendly honor system based competition that can serve to improve our shooting skills, test our equipment and exchange ideas with fellow shooters on what works and what doesn't.
The rules are simple
1. To qualify for listing, pick one or more of the following distances and shoot a five shot group: (1) 50 yards, (2) 100 yards, (3) 200 yards, (4) 300 yards, and/or (5) 500 yards. A "5 shot group" means 5 consecutive shots at the same target. This "match" only works if you honor this 5 shot consecutive shot rule. If you make a bad shot mid group, either live with it and include it in your result, or start a new group at a new target.
2. Any long gun, ammunition and caliber is allowed. There is no limit on modifications.
3. Listings will be broken down into two sight groups: (1) no magnification and (2) magnified.
4. Listings will be broken down into two shooting positions: (1) off hand (standing unsupported), (2) bench resting (any including prone or kneeling). No mounts please. Bags, blocks, bi pods, gun rests, loop slings, etc are all kosher. But having the gun locked down in any way isn't. Lets keep this less about the equipment and more about about the shooter as best we can.
5. Groups will be measured between the two bullet holes that are the farthest apart. Measure from the outside edge of one bullet hole to the inside edge of the other bullet hole that is the farthest away.
6. Measure and record the group sizes on the target. On the target also record your sight type (as per Rule 3), shooting position (as per Rule 4.), long gun make and model, and ammo used (just for completeness sake).
7. Take a picture of the target and post it in the this thread. Try to have the long gun used also in that pic, if possible. That picture is your "official" entry.
8. No limit on the number of entries by any member. Got a better target today from last weeks? Post it up and bump yourself up the rankings.
I will record each shooters scores in the second post of the thread as the targets are posted. The information will include: Shooters username, time/date of target, yardage , shooting position, average group size, long gun used, sight type, ammo make model and caliber
Credit: This idea came from a similar idea for a sub MOA rimfire match on CalGuns.com. Source here: Rimfire MOA Match - Calguns.net
Attached is a sample scored target (taken from the long gun match, but you get the idea.)
PM me or post up here for any questions/comments and feel free to discuss everything and anything related to shooting here in this thread. This is an open discussion! I'll pull out the results as they're posted. Good luck!

I like. As a Law Enforcement Sniper, this will be fun.
Predator 93 Oct. Tune, Radiator Baffle Delete, Intake Reso Delete, LMI True CAI, Mobile 1, EGR Delete, BT Catch Can, Taylor Shorty Wires, and lots of dreams...
What if you don't have anything past 100 yards to shoot at? And not allowed to shoot prone either?
Don't look at this as an all or nothing thing JTS. There are lots of categories and subcategories to hopefully get lots of people to try for one or two or three. If you can't compete in all, no problem! Just compete in those you can. Like, for example, the closest 200 and 300 yarder to me is 3 hours away, and I have no idea where a 500 yarder is. So I plan to complete mostly in the 50 and 100yarders a lot, and hopefully the longer ones someday.
As for the position, I much prefer shooting thru iron sights and standing/off hand, so again I plan to enter those categories a lot, and maybe once in a while try off the bench.
Make sense?
Here are my results from today. All shot at 50 yards, all with a Winchester Model 1894 lever action .30-30 running Remington Core Lokt 150gr soft points

looks like i really need to buy a new camera now. Had a good weekend put 40 rounds .308win, 1000 5.56 and some where around 1500 of 22lr down range.

I've got a model 94 Winchester 30-30. I love it. I feel like John Wayne whenever i use it.

My entry may not count because i did this last fall in prep for hunting season but i did keep one of my targets so I'll throw it on up here.
I used my Browning X Bolt Medallion 300 WSM (left handed). My scope is a Leupold VX-3L 4.5 - 14x50mm with the Bone and Crocket big game reticle. The date was 11/10/11 and was at the Bald Mtn Shooting Range, Lake Orion, MI. 100 yards seated, using sand bags.
The target is up above the HR manager's desk at my office. :-)

I kept ejecting rounds into my face. That rifle pi$$ed me off.
GREAT idea CV. How about adding a 200-yard range into the mix? I can do 100 yards no problem, but 300 yards on my range is dingers only. No targets. 200 would be the sweet spot for me, as 100 would, frankly, be boring (you were spotting for me last time so you know what I mean... assuming the scope holds zero like its supposed to). I'm not saying I'd be a winner in the category as we've got pros here that can do better I am sure... but if this is going to be fun and challenging, I need just a little bit of help, here.
PLUS with all the different ranges people are going to be participating on, having a 200 distance would probably help keep everyone included.
I was going to skip out on hitting the range Thursday if you bailed on me. Now I'm going for sure whether you show up or not.

No doubt. When I was shooting off hand yesterday I was flicking that lever hard enough to fling the brass spinning straight up. Its become pretty much automatic to catch it mid air. A small crowd had gathered before I noticed, and I ended up answering a few questions before they let me shoot again. Pretty funny, especially considering some of the multi thousand dollar rigs they'd put down to come watch the ole cowboy gun do its thing.
Someday I think I'll grab a Golden Boy in 17hmr. Seems like it'd be one hell of a fun gun to shoot.
Awesome group! But sorry boss, rules are rules. We need to see a 5 shot grouping in order for an entry to count. :D
Haha it was pretty damn funny watching the brass bounce off that shiney bald head of yours. Especially for a single guy who looks like you? I'd have thought you'd have the necessary wrist flicking motion down pat!
Done deal daddy-o. Good call. How about adding a 200-yard range into the mix?
(PS: Hey if Thursday is no good, no problem at all. There will be other Thursdays for sure...)
Damn bud you need to adjust those sights!!! I guess I need to break out my Winchester .22 pump.I know the last time I shot it at 100yrd they were all within 1in or less off hand and less on a rest.Im gonna try and go this weekend
