    Is Hip Hop really Dead?

For those who like hip hop, and for those who like "classic rock"...

A new song by Nas: Hip Hop Is Dead
This song combines hip hop with a well known "classic rock" song: In a Gadda Da Vida by Iron Butterfly. Personally I pretty much dig the song. I grew up on "classic rock", I didn't even know other music existed, no joke. Thanks dad! I love you. I never listened to anything besides oldies and classic rock from the '50s to the '70s. I never listened to anything until I discovered hip hop. Hip hop started with me when our family got our first CD player when I was younger. I had to have a CD so I bought He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. Since then I've been into both for a very large majority of my life. When the two styles came together I was liking it a lot. It's not the first and it's not the last. Another I really like is Riders on the Storm (Fredwreck Remix) feat. The Doors by Snoop Dogg.

I know of Walk this Way also, but are there more pieces of music like this out there? And what do you all think of the idea, the songs, the rappers, the rockers, the music lovers?

Hip Hop has evolved. It's not what is SHOULD be, but it's still around.

Hip Hop used to be about the message, the performer and the beats. Now it's about the women, rides and bling.

Gone are the days of Cool G Rap, Afrikka Bambatta, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and Run DMC. Now it's about the grillz, whips and bitches.

Common, Nas, Talib Kweli, Mos' Def and a few others are keeping things alive with true hip hop roots, but it's not the same.

I grew up in a really poor part of Chicago. I was one of the few white kids at the school but I fit in because I was living the same life as the other kids. Hip Hop is not a form of music as much as it is a culture. It's not about culture as much as it's about a way of life.

This is the best metaphor I can come up with...

bikers used to be outlaws, outcasts and the oppressed. Now they are the doctors, lawyers and accountants... So is the way of Hip Hop.

The original Hip Hop is dead, but it's evolution is still alive.

Is the culture of any type of music the reason it is so appealing to the listener?

I think it is with those that remember "true" hip hop. The lines will blur and it will be the same as R&B.

R&B was the Temptations, Chi-lites, etc... Now it's Usher, Mary J. Blige and (child molester) R. Kelly.

When I think about music (in my experience anyways), I see three stand out types that are appealing to the listener because the music speaks of their culture: Hip-Hop, Country music, and Celtic.

I'm sure there are others, but those three genres of music seem to tell stories about ways of life more than any other kind of music.
