    What's your opinion on.....

I was just cruising for a radar detector and ended up on the Beltronics web site when I noticed that they have a couple of accelerometers. I wonder how accurate they are or if they are even worth the investment. Here is a link to the site: http://www.beltronics.com/fx.html

Let me know what you think about them. They seem to have gotten good reviews but none of them spoke of the accuracy, they only spoke of ease of use.

I haven't seen those before, but have heard good and bad things about the G-Tech ones... I think its more of a user error type of thing when people complain that they aren't too accurate... FROM what I understand you need a good long streach of FLAT road and no movement of the car just prior to starting the testing. Any slope will throw off the readings quite a bit...
But I guess if you use it on the exact same section of road you can get a good idea of performance changes with each mod to the car, may not be exactly accurate times, but the effect of mods will still be relevant to the baseline...
I would find a good long section or road and a couple of good objects or lines to use as a starting and ending point, so you can repete the testing as close as possible each time.

I have a g-tech, and have used it on many of my cars... As stated, it may not be super accurate because of mounting and weight variations. Be it could be used effectively to measure mod differences. Unfortunately I didn’t have a chance to test my magnum before its demise.

I had a Bell radar detector a few years ago and it was the biggest piece of garbage I had ever seen. Even after multiple returns, and them saying that my car was the problem, they upgraded me to more expensive units twice, in ORDER to make me happy. But none of them ever worked right, I eventually gave up.

I have heard decent things of Valentine or Escort ones. But just so you know, FROM the cops that I'm friends with. You are better off:

    1. not speeding,

    2. if you do get cought just be nice,

    3. if you have a radar decetor and you are speeding, you will get a ticket. Also most of them look at the price of the car, if it's a cheap beater car, they are more likely to let you go with a warning than if your car is nicer than theirs.

But that is just the few I'm friends with in the NYC area.

I've had a Passport and now an Escort Solo. Both of them have more than paid for themselves in saving me FROM a ticket. I do think I'll find one that detects lasers now as I understand the law is starting to use them.

too bad if you do detect a laser, because slowing down won't help you. Once they get you with a laser, you're done.

laser detectors typically work by detecting scattered laser energy. The beam is straight and narrow until it hits something. Hopefully a few cars in front of you first. Once it hits, it will scatter everywhere.

I will step in here for a moment:
I work in millitary research helping to develope detection and countermeasure systems for target sims.
A "dazzler" can be built, fairly cheaply that can broadcast fulltime ( no FCC rules.. not a radio wave emission) FROM LED emitters placed strategically and near invisibly about the cars windows. WHY someone has not made this defies me.
