Open element Air filter kit interest?

What is everyone's interest on an open element (K&N style) air filter kit for the 300 and Magnum with the Hemi?

How much would you say is a good price for one?

Would you be willing to cut holes under where the airbox used to be to get "real cold air"?

Would you still be interested even though you would get more intake noise than the stock setup?

How easy would the installation need to be? beginner, intermediate, 10 minutes, 1hour?

Please answer ALL the questions realisticly as this will determine what is made.

    Dude!!

I would be VERY interested in a low restriction are intake.

Volant comes to mind with a cold air box and maybe a ram-air intake tube.

I have a Volant on my Sierra C3. I works extremely well.

I would pay upwards of $300 for the set up.

Here is my wish list for the Mangnum(which I have on order).

    1. ECU reprogrammer, like hypertech, superchips or Westers, etc.
    2. Low restriction air intake. (cold air box, etc)
    3. High flow cats
    4. Low restriction cat back exhaust.
    5. MAF recalibration.

I would think this would get us INTO the 370 to 380 hp range and 415 to 425ftlbs.

Nice and just a bit above without getting to radical.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    JS

Very interested in a cold-air kit.

Price in the 300 range is probably fair. The lower the better obviouosly. It is going to be hard to hid all my purchases FROM my wife :-)

The question becomes how much more. I don't mind it, but my wife and or neighors might. Iw oudl expect it not to be all that much except under throttle. Am I wrong? FROM inside it should be fairly quiet, the car does pretty good with road noise.

Cut holes 'gringe'. Not sure, I am mainly looking to boost it up a little for playing around. I don't race much.

    Install - Intermediate. 1hr.

To answer easily and quickly - YES to all of the above.

Price...at this point with no options...I'll pay!

Installation....I built a bike ground up...I don't care how hard you make it...its only a bolt in intake, it could never be impossibly hard.

And I'm already looking for a Spin Tech muffler dealer to install the set up someone here got.

    Guys:

Back in the day. It was as simple as putting and cone filter upstream of the MAF.

Today, a cold air box with a harmonic cone and ram air would be the way to go. You can have your quiet and performance too.

These days it is a bit about tuning the airflow.

Now we could start with the stock box and just put in a high flow element. But, if we can increase the air volume while keeping the turbulence down. That would be the berries. I've got to believe the likes of Volant, K&N, AEM, Granatelli, etc will accommodate the aftermarket if the demand is there.

On my '01 R/T I had an intake designed and built by one guy that had done a bunch of research. He "passed" the design on to another guy that took it one step further by adding a "fence" and a cone filter. The fence (what are they really called?) kept the hot engine air FROM getting to the cone so easy. The original design used the stock airbox with a K&N DROP in filter. I drilled huge holes in the entire bottom of the stock airbox and felt that was enough. It drew FROM the lowest part of the eng compartment and also through the stock hole in the fenderwell. I also added a Dynomax in place of the stock muffler and resonator. Easy in should = easy out. I did not want too little restriction in the exhaust since that seems to lower low end torque. It made a big difference, allowing me to keep up with and slowly close on a 300M Special. They had different gearing and a few more HP, so I felt the little bit I did was well worth the trouble. OOPS, I also had a larger TB. But it was a good running R/T !!

The point? A good intake is an easy upgrade that will help perf and if you open up the exhaust just a little, may be a big difference.

Well guys, couple notes real quick...

First off, a little about me. I am not only a proud owner of a Magnum RT, but I build Dodge hotrods on the side as a buisness (DB Performance Engineering) www.db-performance-eng.com and I will be building and tuning this air system myself, so the price will be lower for you guys than the big companies out there as I dont have the huge overhead they do.

Next, there is no MAF tuning since there is no MAF sensor in these motors.

As for computer tuning, that wont be available for quite some time, Dodge is VERY strict about their engine code and it take forever to hack them.

Lastly, I can get spintech mufflers if you need them, I have a pair of 3" ones on my truck, sounds mean.

    Oh, my credentials:
Graduated top of my class FROM Western Michigan University with a Bachelors degree in Automotive Engineering. I have designed quite a few of the electrical systems in DC's concept cars, most of which were built for internal high level executive review only. On my side job, I mainly build Dakota R/Ts and have mine in the low 11s and will be shooting for low 10s in the quarter this year. I have another one in the high 11s, one I just delivered to customer this weekend in the 12s, and a few others in the 13s. I prefer to REPLACE the engine controllers with Accell DFI units so that I can make my own engine calibration since DC computers are so damn tight.

    intake

I too would be interested in a cold air kit. I would really prefer it to be a bolt in kit with no hacking on the car. I realize this may cause you some design headaches but I think more people would be interested in a kit like this not only due to ease of install but who honestly wants to start cutting on their car? I know I don't.

As far as price goes I have to agree cheaper is better.

Please put a post when you have them up for sale.

I agree with you, cutting is BAD, DROP in is GOOD. Only reason I ask about cutting is because it would get the air filter located behind the bumper outside the engine bay where there is cold air. I think I would get more interest by not cutting, so thats what I will do I think.

What do you have for the Dakota R/T's? I have a Durango R/T and I'm sure most of the stuff you have for the Dakota will fit the Durangos.

yes, should be no issue, both use the same front end other than the facia itself and the fenders.

I already posted in the 300 section to link to here.

Count me in on the intake fabrication.

Sounds like you know D/C mechanicals and electronics.
