New wheels and i have a shimmy

I just added 20" wheels this weekend and there is a Shimmy now. Starts at about 45 and is presitant through 70. They are the correct bolt pattern 5x115.

I had read in several places that many of you have had this issue. Some say hub centrics, Rebalance, alignment etc to correct. Cannot find but I also read about a clip or something you need to remove?? Cannot find that thread now. What have most of you had to do to correct this?

The clips you may need to remove are on two of the studs on each corner.Pull them off and try it.If you still have shimmy you may need to have the wheels rebalanced.

Same as what he said....look at the studs when you take off your wheel....if it still shakes after that then check to see if where you installed those wheels at if they gave you Hub rings....by the looks of those wheels they are not made for any specific vehicle as far as Hub size....you have the correct bolt pattern but the hub is probably a 74 or 78 and our car takes a 71.5 hub.

Try those out and see what happens...if not go back and get a rebalance

I just had the same thing.

About two weeks ago...put on my new 20's and instant shimmy between 48 and 60mph.
Went back for a rebalance using the Hunter Road Force tire balancer (which was out of calibration when I bought the tires/wheels).
    Shimmy is now gone.

This tool makes it impossible for even a half-wit to screw up a balance job.

    Oneredmagnum,
I believe that our hub center bore is 71.8mm. I could very well be mistaken, though.

I have the same issue, shimmy at 40-60. I will remove the clips to see if that works. Otherwise I'll search for a tire shop with the Hunter and get rebalanced.

    Sxtred,
Have you just tried to retighten the lug nuts? Sometimes, they're not torqued down evenly or adequately.

Also check the torque on your wheels with a good torque wrench. Loosen all of them. VERY lighty oil the threads of the studs and then progressively torque the wheels down in a star pattern finally reaching the correct torque.

    And the dead shall walk

Thanks all no clips but i did swap one front to back and re did all the wheels trq to spec.
This seems to have done it as 99% of the shimmy is gone. Rest could be just road feel on the stiffer tires that i am not used to (or never noticed on the stocks). I will be getting some wheel centrics to make sure i get them centered everytime just to be sure.

Once again thanks for the useful information.

A friend of mine owns a shop that owns a Road Force balancing machine - there is a reason it cost him $17,500. They apply i believe (could be wrong) around 1,400 lbs of pressure per tire WHILE being balanced to ensure it seats the proper bead - its wild.

He has gotten some shakes out of cars that we swore would never be taken care of! The machine can also fine high / low spots in the tire, and counter act it with high / low spots in the rim for the ultimate in smooth. Its the new generation of some tire monkey hammering weights onto a wheel. When you are talking 20+ inches , this is a must.
