Lighter wheels, brakes, underdrive pulley, driveshaft, internals are all proven power adders. Can someone please start a sticky or knowledge base discussing this important aspect for our cars. please. im sure im not the only one who wants to start this.
We could start with a proper definition. Unsprung weight refers to all of the items that move up and down with suspension movement, like tires, wheels, brakes and the suspension components.
An underdrive pulley is mounted on the engine. We have an independent rear suspension so the driveshaft is "sprung", it doesn't move.
Without actually changing suspension and drivetrain parts, the only things that change unsprung weight are wheels and tires. Avoiding going to the big wheels is a simple way to make it a non issue.
Not a lot of unsprung weight to remove. There was a rumor floating around that the E-Class Mercedes that our car was born of used aluminum components in the suspension whereas they changed to steel for ours. I think that would be the most massive impact, were that rumor true. And of course, forged 3-piece wheels to knock off some weight there. You can't (or really shouldn't) skimp on brakes to cut weight.
