this ride makes me want a turbo! grand national spin

A good friend of mine just bought a 1987 Grand National with 59k ORIGINAL miles - with a solid $15,000 in motor / computer / turbo upgrades.

rolling on the throttle - anything over 1/4 throttle to 1/2 throttle spools the massive T65 turbo up and destroys the rear tires!!! I WANT A TURBO!! I was driving it since it was on my dealer plate - so I got to have all the fun. . This thing had a F.I.R.E. I think it was stand alone fuel system & system management, a USB port coming out of the glove box to tune it from 93 octane (18 lbs of boost) to 116 octane to run 27 lbs of glorious forced induction. I have never driven anything like this before. that is all.

    We need turbo hemi's!!!!

There are two turbos on the horizon for the hemi's. I think that you would be a great candidate for one.

I miss my 87 GN. Mine was the 2nd one produced. I was a white collar with GM then.
It had no competition then stock. Corvettes, Mustangs, nothing. It was cool. 13.80's stock.

When I was in the Chicago area Impala club (the HERD), one of our members had a turbo Buick - not sure if it was a Grand National (think it was). This car was a monster, full roll cage, slicks, many, many mods.
Car ran low 10's I think.

    A beast.

I remember when I had my 85 Mustang GT. I raced one on the freeway. I thought, easy kill. Nope he walked on me pretty good. I had not heard of the 86 but knew the 85 was a dog. I gave up before his rev limiter kicked in. If I had known... We were two young kids and we had a great laugh about that when we stopped to talk at the next exit. He knew right what to say "you have been hardest GT to beat so far". That made me feel good. After I traded in the GT I got an SVO (a 2.3 turbo BTW) and I remember telling corvette drivers that could not get away from me that, the 'vette still get’s the girls.
Heck now if you race someone you get the bird win or loose. Fart cans have brought soo much class to racing. Maybe it's the new protect the self esteem in school stuff?

Yah, boost ROCKS. My other 4-wheel toys are all turbocharged Dodges - got an 86 Shelby Omni GLHS that's "undergoing restoration" - read, sitting in the garage, partially disassembled, with an intercooled 2.2 turbo; 87 Shelby CSX with 70 trim turbo (pulling it in the garage today, actually, to diagnose a dead miss on #3); 89 Shelby CSX-VNT with a modified 60-trim Garrett Variable Nozzle Turbo (NO lag); a 91 Daytona competition package car that I bought new in '91; and a '91 Spirit R/T with the Lotus-head 16v 2.2 turbo motor. Yep. Boost is cool Oh, almost forgot the family workhorse - 2005 Cummins 2500 with STOCK boost setting of 30psi! But, I have to admit...those GNs are schweeeet, even if they aren't Mopar!

I certainly would not refer to the 84/85 non-intercooled turbo Regals as dogs. I had an 85 T-type that ran low 13s with just bigger exhaust, tweaked chip and a better cam. Granted, the intercooled 86/87 turbo Regals were running that with little/no work at all...

Yeah, those Grand Nationals were fast... too bad they had a 125 mph limiter on them (supposedly because of the speed rating on the tires..... I think it was so the Corvette would have the higher top speed) racer-xerols... I used to have an 86 Omni GLH ... non turbo with 110hp though. Took it on the autobahn.. topped out at 113 mph with the catalytic converter off. Those GLH-S models are rare... only 500 were made and all were sold before they even hit the dealer. 176hp turbo intercooled 2.2 good for 0-60 mph in 6.5 secs with a top speed of 130 mph ....

I have an 87 GN (as you may tell from my username) just got an 06 Magnum RT for the wife, both are black and look mean My wife makes fun of my little V6 Buick, asking me "Does it have a HEMI" and "I think my car is faster than yours" One day I'll have to school her on that one The Buicks do have ammazing little motors in them for under $2000 I have got the car running low 12's and still get 28MPG on the highway. But I must admit I really love the Magnum as well, I plan on taking them both to the track this summer and getting some goods pics of them side by side in the burnout box, and at the tree. than we'll see which one is faster !!!!!
