There have been a few posts about a rattling/buzzing noise coming from the rear of the Magnum. Today...I attempt to hunt down that bastitch and silence the wild beast. It all begins here...at the @$$-end (interior):
(Yes that is a Bacard! towel...and YES, I needed them! - UGH it was HOT! and I was THIRSTY!)
I began by pulling out all the interior pieces...The rear deck, and lower storage, the spare tire, the jack, side panels...all were relatively easy...(TIP: use a small towel to protect the panels from getting dirty from your grubby hands!!) they all popped of those clips fairly easily. Also, you will have to take out the leather side part of your rear seat to access all the screws for the side panel. Here's a shot with it removed:
In the end all this is exposed:
!!! look at those rub-marks!!!
Now lets look at the side panel I just took out!
Now lets try the other side...Nope. No rub marks there. hhhmmmm... This isn't exactly that metalic rattling noise I was initially looking for, but there's SOMETHING going on there...Maybe I carry to many water bottles in that side pocket?? Who knows...Moving on...Yank out the OEM "insulation" on the other side...(Take note of that black thing. It is a vent of some kind.)
At THIS point...I turned to my fellow LX'ers and searched here for the "low-budget dynamat". I found this thread:
MDS/SLP drone killed...at Home Depot!
I cleaned up the metal (as instructed) and started to roll this stuff out.... Trying to maintain as many large pieces as possible. VERY carefully rolling it, jamming it into corners, making sure ALL the metal was covered with no gaps between the two. TIP: Be sure to poke holes wherever there are holes in the sheet metal!! These are the guides to re-align the side panels when you go to put them back in!!) In this picture you can see that I left a "flap" that goes over the little black louvered-thing. - I assume this is to equalize the pressure when opening/closing doors.? Fnky what's that do??
See the square of alluminum when I put the OEM "insulation" back in place?
Completed passenger side:
Now lets not forget about the rear door!! Be SURE to get ALL the sheet metal! Take note in this picture the "Cheapo mat" within the door itself! (see the little shiney square??) And then cover the door...being sure to stay away from the wiring, and wire connectors. I push/pulled jammed my hand in there to get the layering under the wires and connectors when ever possible! AND I peeled away ALL the aluminum backing off the "Cheapo mat" around the wires or connectors too. - Last thing *I* want is the aluminum cutting into the wires!
Here it is...all "wrapped" and most parts back in place...
DONE!!
Does the Cheapo mat" cut down on the overall noise?? Yes! did *I* solve the rattling issue?.....mmmmmm....I'll have to say, "No." Although it has been cut down VERY much, *I* still believe it is there... SO...onto the next mission: working from the outside in. Now, How do I pull off the bumper?![]()
