Pulling fuse 11 in the forward PDC (fuse box - schematic on underside of lid) for 30 seconds or so will clear both the PO196 fault code and the resultant CEL (Check Engine Light).Originally Posted by halo2
If you don't get a recurrance consider it a random electronic glitch. If it recurs I'd leave it uncleared and have a Dodge or Chrysler dealer check it out.
I'd guess you have a 2006 model. Providing such information up front enables other members to better assist you.

P0196–ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUIT PERFORMANCE
Possible Causes
- When Monitored: Engine off time is greater than 480 minutes. Ambient temperature is greater than 4°C (38° F).
- Set Condition: The PCM detects the Engine Oil Temp value is incorrect by comparing it with the other engine inputs. Three good trips to turn off the MIL.

(G224) ENGINE OIL TEMP SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN
(K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN
