    Question OIL and FILTER QUESTION

Okay... I fly back to Hawaii on Wednesday after 6 weeks of being trapped in South Carolina. I am stoked to finally getting to drive Tessie again, but she needs her first oil change. What filter and oil do you all recommened?

Oh boy - this is a very subjective question. Should you have any interest in the subject: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

I'm going with 3,000 mile changes until my warranty runs out. I'll start using synthetic then, with 5-6,000 mile changes. Until then I am using Motorcraft 5W-20. It is a semi-synthetic oil and if you dig around http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ you will find this is a highly rated oil based on the many used oil analyses posted on the BITOG board.

For filters I use Purolator if they are on sale, otherwise I use WalMart SuperTech. Don't laugh. The anal oil guys over on BITOG swear by SuperTech as good standard type filters. They are made by Champion Labs, who makes Bosch and many other name brand filters. They are fine for 3000 mile oil change intervals. When I go with longer OCI's I will use a premium filter, probably Wix/Napa Gold or Purolator Pure One.

I like the K&N filters. When it comes to oil, just choose the brand you like that offers the correct weight. If you adhere to the 3 month interval, synthetic is a waste of money. I use Mobil 1 in 2 of my cars. One came from the factory with Mobil 1 and I change oil every 3k but I only drive the car in good weather and put around 6k a year on the car. The other car is our daughters and I change the oil every 6 months. My wife drives a Jeep and my daily driver is the Magnum. The Dodge dealer offers a 2 year maintenance contract for $160. It includes oil changes every 3k/3 months with a loaner vehicle. I let the dealer care for the Jeep and the Dodge with their filter and oil.

    Redline all the way!

I'll never use anything other than Redline oils in any vehicle I care about. Yeah, it's a bit more expensive than the other synthetics, but I change the oil by the book (don't look for longer drain intervals) and have had great success.

When I did a cam weld in my 1999 Taurus SHO, we had a lot of the top end disassembled to get to the cams. with 83,000 miles on the clock, I had used Redline for about 70,000 miles. It was super clean under there, with no sludge or other build up of any kind.

Redline has a 5-20 product (even though most of the sellers don't list them on their websites, it is available). I've provided it to the dealer when doing the oil change, no problem from them.

With regard to the filters, here is a link to a great article regarding filters. While they pretty much all stink, some stink less than others. I got this link on this forum at one point in time, I just don't remember when. It's good reading:

    http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfi...lterstudy.html

WHile the dealer is using the Mopar factory filter on the 300C, I've been using the Mobil 1 filters on my other vehicles.

Any brand name 5-20w oil should be ok. I always go to the dealer for the filter (only $6.00). It gives me a receipt with a date and I've heard that DC is picky about the filters when it comes to warrenty work.

they don't care what brand oil or filter you use, as long as it meets or exceeds manufacturer's specifications. what they are picky about is you keeping dated receipts so you can prove required maintenance was performed.
