    n00b has landed!!!

Hi guys! I'm new to the forums. I've been reading them the past couple of weeks. I just purchased a used 2006 Magnum R/T. It has 17k on it and I have a few questions. Please forgive my ignorance on some of these things. Like I said I'm a n00b!

In another thread on these forums I read that someone posted that you have to contact DC via 800 number within 30 days to transfer over the 3/36k warranty over to yourself and also check and see if there was an extended warranty on the vehicle etc. (never heard of such a thing JUST to get the original manufacture warranty, however I am aware of doing such a thing on extended warranties) True/False? Any info appreciated.

What kind of oil pressure/temps are you guys seeing with the 5.7? What is the norm at idle etc? Keep in mind I'm in Arizona and it regularly get's up to 110+! =( Also what was the factory oil fill? Was it Mobil 1? If not what do you guys think of the Mobil 1 synthetic that is good for 15k? What are your suggestions for oil in general.

What kind of temps are you guys seeing with your temp guage? Mine sits just below halfway regularly. I've also noticed that the FANS RUN a TON on this thing. Am I having some sort of overheating issue or is this the norm for these cars? Again I'm in Arizona where its super hot and its summer time! It also could be due to the AC being on and me noticing it while it's sitting there idleing kicking off and on like it should. Just seems to me like it comes more than I think it should. Is this normal for the car that the fans run a lot and is the temp guage being just below halfway considered normal? I understand that if I press and hold the compass button and music note button I can go into diagnostic mode and see a digital read out of engine temp but is that just the engine oil temp or coolant temp. What should I expect to see temp wise? This TEMP ISSUE really has me concerned so ANY/ALL info in this area is welcome.

Any useful things/tips I should be aware of and or spend some time researching? Anything that you guys could teach me about the vehicle that is handy/good to know would be great.

Now on to the great debate here from what I have read. What mods should I look into. I want to start out slow and work my way on up. I really want to go out and get one of the forced induction kits for this thing and melt some rubber but I'm thinking it'd be best to preserve the warranty on the beast for a while. So what are your thoughts? CAI seems to be the biggest debate here. I hear the AirHammer is good and I'm pretty interested in it. I'm just not sure I understand how it will offer any increase in performace/mpg. I understand there isn't a mass airflow sensor on these guys so I'm not sure how the car compensates with more gas etc with all this ADDED air and such. Can someone educate me on this? What other things do you suggest I do to the vehicle such as maitnance/care etc?

I thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy post that more than likely has some typos in it. All the info I can get is great! Thanks again!!

Not sure on the stuff in the beginning, but I would def recommend a CAI. Not too up on the AirHammer, but the other ones, K&N or Airaid (which I have) seem to all be the same. I would also recommend a nice exhaust to open up the car a little. I saw improvements in my MPG with the CAI and the cat-back so you cant go wrong with those.

As far as the temp issue, my gauge usually is exactly halfway. I put in the Robert Shaw t-stat and now its below halfway somewhat. I would recommend looking into the fan mod and t-stat ($12 upgrade from Autozone) since you live in that hot hot heat. Im sure others will chime in, but thats what I have for now.

Hey post some pics up of your cool ride too

I can answer a few of your questions.

If you bought your used Magnum at a dealership you shouldn't have to transfer any warranty. I bought mine used (certified used) from a local dealership and all warranties went to me. 3/36 plus I got an 8/80 powertrain warranty.

If you bought it in a private sale then yes I would think you need to call the 800 number.

My V6 runs the same as yours as far as heat. It's just before the halfway mark. Exactly half way is 200 degrees according to the CAN bus connection I have to a PC. If you don't have EVIC you will need to find another way to get the temps. It sounds like you are running normal temps to me.

The factory oil recommendation is what's on the oil cap. The SRT-8's need synthetic the rest can use regular oil in the proper viscosity. You can switch to synthetic if you want. I wouldn't go 15,000 miles between oil changes though but that's just me.

My fan runs all the time when the A/C is on. I've also done the fan mod so I can turn on my big fan when ever I want.

I say go for the AirHammer. That's the best CAI as far as I'm concerned. You should also start thinking about replacing your exhaust (CAT back).

As to engine temp, my RT / 5.7L used to run as high as 218-221.
I think that's normal while you're sitting in traffic.
And when you're sitting, slowly moving thru a drive-thru, etc the fan comes on incessantly -- it's doing its job.

When you're moving temp should run down to 210-215.

At least that's what I recall.

WOW fast answers guys. Much appreciated. As far as the 15k oil thing I'd never go that long. Just nice to know that it is "supposed" to protect/last that long. I'd probably go 7500 miles tops between changes. I'm going to go to a synthetic for sure. I'm just debating what route/brand to go with. I've been thinking Amsoil but I'm leaning more towards the Mobil 1 stuff since it's factory fill for a lot of auto makers these days. That's what came in the CTS-V from factory etc so shrug. So the Air Hammer is the ticket eh? I'll have to look into it some more but I was leaning in that direction myself. It'd be neat if I could make this beast go as fast as my Buick GN. Oh well off to more reading/research there is a lot of info on here. Thanks again.

Oh one thing I forgot to ask is this. What common problems are there with these cars if any? Have there been any recalls? Is there a good place to locate all of the TSB's that is broken down by car/year, something that is super organized and easy to read? Any stuff I should be concerned/worried about TSB/recall wise? Thanks again!

My RT has had zero problems, except when I had my 20s on I tended to get rubber build up on the inside of my fender and smoke going everywhere. But thats a diff story

One common issue would be the windows, rear windows in my case. They tend to randomly stop working sometimes and then they begin to work again. Its weird but if it happens, its a common problem.

Another question I forgot to mention. I've read a place or two that Magnum sales are really down etc. What are you're thoughts on this? Do you think sales are down a lot and or will we see them stop production on the Magnums? Also what model year will be the last year for the first gen Magnums? Will it be 2009 or 2010? I think automakers usually have a model out for 6 years before a complete redesign unless I'm mistaken. I'm planning on picking up a SRT 8 Magnum in 2 years when this R/T is paid off or maybe the Challenger if I like it.

If production stops, then they will be worth much more. So I hope they stop making them

I have been told 2009 is the last year from my dude at the dealership. He has talked to many people over at Chrysler or whatever its called now and '09 will be the last year. Sure it could change, but im just letting you know what I have been told.

If the 300 wagon comes out then I see no maggies as a possibility, but so long as they are the only LX wagon, they will probably continue, % wise they are selling more Magnums than Ford was selling Taurus wagons
