    factory spare tire question

Just a quick question for all you guys & gals running larger wheels. Do you still carry the factory spare? If yes, cool. If no, what did you replace it with?

There is no room where the spare tire mounts to carry a full size spare, you are stuck with the factory "doughnut".

All you can do is carry a can of tire sealant if you get a flat.

My 20" 255/45/20 are about the same circumference as the stock tire. I asked that question at Goodyear & they said there would be no problem using the donut for a short time.

I have 245/45's and just like HLYCrap they will work with the stock donut.

As a normal safety item, the donut should not be on the drive axel.

AAA is cool unless you drive out of metro areas... something tells me they'd take a while to get to you if you were crossing wyoming. The doughnut can run on the front of the car all day long... try to limit its time on the rear though. The 50miles, 50mph recommendation isn't because the tire won't hold up, it's because it works the hell outta the differential. even a small difference in diamater will cause the differential to transfer different amounts of power to the wheels... over time it'll get hot as a crotch and can ultimately be damaged.

So if you get a flat tire on the rear just swap it out for a front tire and put that donut on the front.

As a normal safety concept, don't hotrod with the doughnut on. I will have to put it on a drive axle on my AWD. Driving a few miles on the spare is not going to hurt the differentials. They are well lubricated and are constantly running at different speeds as you corner. Short of extreme acceleration situations with really pwerful engines, how often does a differential fail? Not once on 45 cars over 45 years for me.

I have seen a TSB that states the dougnut may hit the steering knuckle on the front! I hope to never have to use it!

If that is correct, what's the point of having a spare?

I agree. I wouldn't change a tire myself. I just checked my AAA car. Member since 1977.
