Dirt simple drone fix, MagRT with SLP

Well, we've had an SLP Loudmouth II exhaust on our MagRT for about 2 years. We LOVE the sound. I lined the trunk bottom sheetmetal (under the interior trim and spare) with peel-n-stick duct insulation from Home Depot and it helped a little. Made it liveable, but you could still definitely tell it had an aftermarket exhaust on it.

Well, we were in Home Depot the other day and they have "patch rolls" of fiberglass insulation, about 2' wide x 4.5' long, and about 2" thick. Hm. Got a couple rolls and figured I'd give it a shot.

Pulled the lower tailgate interior panel off (2 screws at the 'pulldown' handle, and pop-pins the rest of the way around), unplugged the light, set it on the trunk floor so I didn't scratch it, unrolled one of the rolls of insulation and put it on top. Perfect fit, couple inches off each end and it's just right.

Pushed it down around the pop-pins, cut a hole for the wiring for the light, and re-installed everything.

    Wow.

For five minutes' work, it makes a huge difference. You can still hear it when you're on the throttle (the good stuff), but the drone and the MDS lawnmower sound are waaay muted now. uConnect is useful again!

Anyway, just thought I'd share my $5 / 5 minute upgrade. I finally got one right, LOL.

Very nice to hear this. Awesome discovery!! I have been wanting to go with something louder but have been put off because of the drone. So it sounds as if the majority of the problem is from the liftgate and not the floor.

If it works as good as you say it does, I better buy some home depot stock in thew morning. LOL! Thats a great tip, looking forward to hear some other opinions, as I battled for over a year trying to eliminate the drone then I finally broke down and went back to stock.

    Stock catback, and stock drivetrain

I've been considering doing this myself but not due to drone. When I had my hatch panel off for a few days to delete the wiper and hatch handle I noticed that the car was waaaay louder inside with just the panel off. Thought it would really reduce the tone of the JBA system inside the car if I insulated the rear panel. Have the insulation...just need to do it. Glad to hear it works!

I did the same thing a couple months ago. Not for the drone, but for the rattling interior panel.

If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?

McKinney - I filled the entire area below the window, from taillight to taillight, window to bumper. Just unrolled the insulation on the trim panel, trimmed it to fit, and popped the 'assembly' (panel and insulation) back onto the liftgate.

I'd hate to try and take the panel off again for a pic, it's getting cold enough here I don't want to break a brittle pin or piece of interior trim....

That sounds like a great idea. I don't get a lot of noise/drone or anything with my Blastin' Bob reso kit but I can definitely hear a "hum" sort of tone from the back when on the highway. This might be the best way to fix that...and cheap too. Beans for that.

Picture or post a link of the product? How many rolls? Couple = 2?

I'm definitely trying this! Not so much for the drone (doesn't bother me) but the rattles in the rear liftgate!

I bought 2 rolls to be safe, only used one. It's in the insulation aisle at Home Depot, the roll is about 8" around x 2' long, yellow fiberglass insulation (think a yellow version of the Pink Panther stuff), and when unrolled it's about 2" thick.

That sounds like a winner! my only concern would be the heat coming off the hatch light, I realize it does'nt stay on long but my light gets incredibly hot in a very short time.
