    Dash VIN tag gone...

I was going to look up the recalls (if any) for my car and found that the VIN tag in the windshield has dissappeared!

After calling the local shop and driving over there, we found it, sort of.
It is still attached but the dash has it mostly covered. all you can see is the left most edge and half the first number.

Tech said the he refuses to take apart another dash (said DC will only pay 2.5 hours for pulling a dash and it takes 3 times that long). He thought pulling the windshield would be best. Then he realized that the dash had no cutout around the tag and thinks that ordering a new speaker/vent cover should do it??

I'd show you pictures but the camera just can't see it...

Damned if a small thing didn't turned into a mess this time....:(

BTW: my car is an 05 Mag RT. might want to check yours

First off, mad props for the despair.com quote. That site is so true to life it's scary. But anyway, my vin tag is clearly visible. I have an '05 manufactured in november of '04. That is a sucky problem to have if the car ever (and it better not) gets stolen. I assume you at least have the vin on record from the dealer??

Yep, I got it new, ordered from the factory and all paper work is on file with DMV. so for all those wondering, it's not hot.

Pulling the speaker cover part of the dash panel only takes about 5 minutes. If that's the part they think you need, why would he think it takes 7 hours?

If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?

If you need the VIN # it should be on the door, insurance papers and the bill of sale and if you keep the original MSRP sticker.

Well, I just looked through tivo'ed episode of AutoWeek. There were like 5 minutes dedicated to topic of hiding the VIN number on the dash, since so many thieves could just copy it and use it on a stolen car. Heck, you might have lucked uot, nobody can copy your VIN :-) Just trying to brighten up your day.

In new york here the VIN is also on the registration sticker, so it makes it more difficult to hide the number from the crooks.

Thanks Apollo. I'd leave it, but here in CA if I was to get a parking ticket, they might just tow the car (thinking its stollen). Even if I get pulled over, I'd have some splanin' to do.

Plus now I've got a good excuss to put it in the shop and get some of the TSBs done

I have a similar problem but it was caused by the windshield not being placed correctly when it was replaced. The little vin window is off enough to make it a bear to read!
