    crazy gas gauge

does your gas gauge misinterpret how much is left in the tank? i know mine does for a fact. for example:
i fll up my tank roughly every 3-4 days. i get an average of 300-320 miles per 16 gallon tank. if i watch it close enough, i'll drive upwards of 200 miles, nd my gauge will only move up to about 7/8 of a tank. driving home i notice that instead of being on 7/8, its now sitting pretty at 1/4 of a tank.

all i'd like to know is if anyone else has had this problem, and if so, is there a way to fix it? i don't think there is a TSB out on this as of yet, and as usual, the dealership isn't helping any.

if yours is an '05 built between nov/20/04 and dec/2/04, then recall D36 may apply

edit: had a couple of 300s with wonky fuel guages. "fuel level sensor 2 performance" DTC was set in CCN. both times i replaced driver's side level sensors because the float arm was sticking. although their symptom was indicator never reaching full, it might cause sudden drop of level indicator.
in order to remove the fuel pump module (which is serviced with level sensor), the fuel level must be below 1/4 tank. if not, fuel will spill into the interior of the car.

Fortunately, UberPariah, DC is on top of the situation and are in the process of assigning a TSB number as we speak to correct precisely that problem.

Here's a spy photo that just came in of the new gauge:

recall D36 involves cluster recalibration. no parts required, ten minute job, can't hurt to try.
as far as i know, it can only be done using starscan.

i edited my first post to add more info.

Looks like D/C has borrowed the gage from my 1975 Olds 98 with the 455 4V carb and curb wt of 2.5 ton.

Best mpg I ever got out of the was 16 mpg driving 55 mph, and it averaged about 12 mpg in town. That makes my SE seem like an economy car these days.

I had a '76 Cutlass, man those cars were friggin boats, LOL. I forgot what V8 it had in it (350 I think) but I remember the sound of the secondary's kicking in when you would punch it!

I believe another member had the same issue, with his 300 (FatChance). I believe it was the fuel gauge.

    fnkychkn or anyone else,
Not sure if the recall you mentioned would work for me, but my fuel gauge at 1/2 tank usually reads around 200 miles then before you know it, it goes to telling me a need to fill up when I hit around 300 miles. Mine was built on 03-03-05.
Does this happen to anyone else? it is frustrating though, thinking I should be getting better mileage than 300-320 for my SXT.

    thanks!!

today i noticed this. i filled up 4 or 5 gallons (i was on fumes) because the dealer was supposed to give me a free tank. i drove to the dealer (which was maybe 20 miles), and when i left the dealer, the light was on and said i had 9 miles left in the tank  filled up when it said i had 4 gallons left then (my salesman was out :( ), and it filled to 17 gallons which makes sense to me having 2 gallons left in the car, vs less than 1 the computer said.
