Question 6 banger dif in a RT?

The 3.9:1 ratio in the standard LX would be nice in an RT. Are they the same (just as strong) as the RT dif? Will it bolt in?

Nope. Won't work. R/T ring and pinion is actual smaller. That would make hugh differnce if change the gear ratio 3.90..

Why not swap the carrier, it would easier than doing the gear swap. That was one advantage Ford diffs had, pull the shafts, drop the pumpkin a toss in the replacement.

They are different size differentials Base LX has 198 MM. R/T has 210MM. and none of the parts are interchangable.

I was thinking take the entire 3rd member and mount it in place of the existing diff. Would make sense that the drive line and half shafts have the same mounting points.

A pumpkin swap sounds like the best shot. Any top MB mechanics out there that can answer this one.

what type of difference do you think there would be in 0-60 with the 3.90 gears. i love the highway-speed acceleration with the 2.82's, not to mention the mileage, but i want some more low rpm acceleration. thanks

My intent was to ask about swapping the whole dif, not just the gears. Digger10, a swap to lower gears would realy wake these cars up on the low end for sure. In therory, top speed would suffer, but more likely, that too would improve if more useable HP and torque is sitting there beyond the stock rev-limiter. One thing for sure, MPG will drop some.

can't have it both ways---standard gearing is a comprimise---i use the paddel shift to set the r's where i want---rear end change big $$----supercharger around 6K------------i really think stock 340hp is way too cool, go like hell when you want to or cruse at 23mpg---come back, Bob

I like that idea! However I would find a junked SXT and snag the carrier so that if the gear blows out from the load you still have your old one.
    NOW THEN:
What about the ECU? I bet it would throw a code because of the engine rev's not matching the other condition parameters.

I've been checking the online wrecking yards in Nor-Cal trying to find one. If I can get it I'll be the ginny pig and test it. I should be able to get my dealer to set the ring & pinon in start scan for me.
