    180 stat

Just moved from Florida to NC and the first day it got about 40 to 50 in the morning the engine light came on so I hooked up the chip and it was the thermostat. Cleared the light and ran it a few more days until the temp dropped down again and same thing. So, went and got a stock thermostat put it in and have not had an engine light since.

You arent getting up to temp quick enough the way to avoid this it to drive in autostick until you reach 170 or so...

The P0128 is a thermostat code. It's illuminated when the car doesn't reach operating temperature (about 172*F +) within a predetermined time.
    P0128

    Theory of Operation

The PCM predicts what the engine coolant temperature should be, based on the engine coolant temperature at start-up, ambient temperature and how the vehicle is subsequently driven. The predicted engine coolant temperature is compared to the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor reading. The error between the two is calculated and integrated with respect to time. When the Thermostat diagnostic runs, the integrated error is compared to a calibrated threshold and pass/fail is determined. Separate pass and fail thresholds are used in order to improve accuracy of the diagnostic.
    • When Monitored:
    • Engine running.
    • Set Condition: The PCM predicts a coolant temperature value that it will compare to the actual coolant temperature. A significant difference results in an error. Two Trip Fault. Three good trips to turn off the MIL.
Possible Causes</B> LOW COOLANT LEVEL THERMOSTAT OPERATION SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO BATTERY VOLTAGE TEMPERATURE SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (K900), (G931) SENSOR GROUND OTHER POSSIBLE CAUSES PCM

That will teach you to leave Florida............................... LOL

Heck, I live in Ocala and the morning temps sometimes dip into the 30's.
I get no codes on my 180 thermostat................... But then I am retired and don't go out until it warms up.

I'm guessin' that's about 8 minutes based on my non-scientific study of getting that code a few times. Anyone know for sure or are there too many variables?

A 180 thermostat is closed until it reaches 180 (or thereabouts), right? So what I don't get is why the warmup is different between a stock and a 180 thermostat that causes this code. Both t-stats are closed until at least 172, right? And closed is closed, isn't it?
