What type of oil is recommended in the HEMI?

Just wondering what type of oil is recommended in the HEMI equipped LX's. Is it a lighter weight to better fuel economy?

Had my oil changed in my 300C at 1000 miles and was told it used synthetic oil. Goinmg in for my 2500 change and I'm sure it will be the same.

1. The owners manual

3000 mile oil changes with synthetic seems like a waste of money.... Is this what's recommended?

As per the owners manual you have two maintenance schedules.
Normal duty, and Hard/Police/dusty-desert/Taxi Duty
1st oil change 6000 for normal & 3000 for Hard use.
5-20w is the recommended – If you go w/ the 3K oil change
Dino – is just fine. (IMHO) Wait till you have a few K miles
On the ticker and switch to Syn oil if you want.

I asked Amsoil tech support about this new 5W-20 oil recommendation as I suspected it had something to do with fuel efficiency or CAFE requirements. Turns out I was right.

In response to your inquiry, we introduced our AMSOIL Synthetic 10W30 XL7500 (XLT) Motor Oil nearly three years ago when Ford and Honda changed to this viscosity. Here’s a paragraph we published concerning this subject. It would apply to any Chrysler engines as well.

The manufacturers that have introduced the 5W20 viscosity recommendations (Honda/Acura and Ford) have done so only as a tool to obtain higher fuel mileage ratings FROM the EPA. We do offer this viscosity in our AMSOIL Synthetic XL7500 Series 5W20 (XLM). There is no real difference in the engines that previously used a 30 viscosity. The use of products such as our AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 0W30 Motor Oil (TSO) will not affect the manufacturer's warranty and offers a tremendous protection and drain interval length advantage. AMSOIL Synthetic 5W30 Motor Oil (ASL) is another very popular option. The choice lies with the customer.

Based on this I will continue to use the Series 2000 OW-30 oil, AFTER I let the engine break-in properly. Now, wanting to be sure I get full break-in and maximum horsepower, I think I will wait a few thousand miles longer than usual and wait until 3K - 5K before changing over.

just changed to mobel 1 10-30(600 miles) no top end clatter, no problems from dealer, MDS works fine 16 to 18 in town-ask other owners about top end clatter with 5w20----i make sure the motor is warmed up befor i get on it, same as my 928s and my dealer had no problems with this

-----------------10-w30 mobel 1 is my choice, no top end clatter--dealer says ok for oil and schd A, 6k miles or 6mo because i only average 400mi in 3mo

------using sync oil your motor will never slugd, my 928s(83) is as clean as new----buy the oil at wallmart,$ 23.xx for 5 qts---your dealer will charge you $9.50 a qt

According to the owners manual the ONLY oil weight to use is 5-20. Since the manual says this and you use another weight like 10-30 you VOID your warranty. GrayMagnum I would ask another dealer. I asked my dealer and he made it very clear that it will void the warranty for the entire engine.

Key ISSUE that's been mentioned elsewhere is that the MDS is sensitive to the oil weight and may not function properly -- I wouldn't use any other weight (than 5/20) because of this.

With all due respect to AMSOIL, they have apparently not investigated the MDS requirement of the HEMI -- (or they have, and DC has not told us that other weights are OK)

TSB 09-15-04 states that vehicles with the 5.7L multiple displacement system (MDS) MUST use SAE 5W-20 oil. failure to do so may result in improper operation of the multiple displacement system.

As a follow-up to previous oil weight questions. For the first change the dealer only had Mobile 1 Full Synthetic 5w-30. I figured that there would be no difference between 5w-20 and -30 so I went ahead with the change. The dealer and several postings had lead me to believe that there was no Mobile 1 5W-20 Synthetic available. After looking a bit I was able to locate some at one AutoZone location. The service was done today and I personally felt a difference in the drive and the MPG did show a slight increase. I basically tested it driving one way on the highway and reset it for the trip back. I have no doubt of the benefits of 5w-20 and I have also ordered the Royal Purple brand for the future changes. At a minimum 5w-20 is MANDATORY and I would highly recommend synthetic or a synth blend for enhanced performance and life.
