    Valve Train Noise

My RT seems to make quite a bit of valve train noise, for lack of a better term. It reminds me of a car with a 100k miles instead of a brand new engine. Sounds sloppy. Am i the only one? Is this normal? Is this a result of using a 5w oil? Should I have the dealer look INTO it? Should I just swap out the exaust so I can't hear it anymore?

    Howdy Black,

Sorry to hear about the problem with your RT. If I were you I will take it right back to the dealership to get fixed.

I must be the luckiest RT owner, other than the right pull thingy, I have had NO problem with my RT. No valve train noise, no tail gate problem, nothing but sheer joy with my RT. :D

I drive a lot for my business, FROM one Client to the other, FROM one construction site to the other, boy it is just so great and enjoyable driving this car. I love the power, the efficency, the interiors, the stereo, the uconnect, the ride, ...... :D

I never thought I could own a car better than my Infiniti Q45, this RT tops it in all ways.

well, first off...that's the reason for this question. I'm not nessesarily saying it's a problem. Some engines sound diferent than others. If I recall correctly the RT that I test drove back in April had a similar sound.

I will try and post some audio files so you guys can hear what I mean.

Have you done anything to the air filter such as a cold air intake?? Sometimes these will make the engine sound louder. Also, there is a distinctive tick that comes FROM the fuel injector solenoids firing. I will listen to mine this evening when I get home to see if I can hear something unusual also. I will post here if I find anything.

I was going to post this earlier - I had opportunity to pop the hood with engine running before our test drive and didn't hear anything that I would associate with the valve train, but there was that familiar "injector tick." Not bothersome though, as it was inaudilble when I shut the hood.

I hope you are only hearing this with the engine running, and the hood open, and your face near the engine.

The engine in my RT is pretty quiet while idling, driving etc. Only time i hear anything is under pretty hard acceleration.

If you are listening to the engine directly...ummmm.. I'll have to try this myself.

Also, go down to the dealer, and have him perform the same test with a newer car, assuming he even has an RT. I did this recently regarding what i considered a rough idle. The one on the lot idles just the same... sigh. Funny how many things you miss when purchasing a car. You are so excited, hard to be objective.

Increase your fuel octane and see if it helps, and use the right oil, it's 5-20W, not 5W, get it FROM amsoil, they seem to be the best.

ALL 5.7L HEMI's, MDS OR NOT, MAKE A TICK NOISE AT IDLE. Some are a lttle louder than others. The local service rep. said it was exhaust valvetrain noise, and it is not correctible. I've been working on HEMI's since 2002 when they came out in the 2003 DR 2500/3500 trucks. Brand new, they made this noise.
