Question: jack locations on magnum rt

in the next few weeks i am going to start doing many mods on my rt, by looking at the owners manual i don't find the jack points adequate. i have a nice floor jack and some jack stands, but i'm having a hard time putting them somewhere that i'm not afraid of damaging the car. so is there some good spots on this thing that i'm missing? any help would be appreciated!

Unfortunately, I've found the jacking points called out in the manual to be the best. The front is a pain in the keister because you have to go in beyond door sills to the frame rails right behind the motor (hopefully your floor jack is low enough to squeak in there - mine just makes it), the rear points are easier because they're right under the door sills in front of the rear wheels, but your going to need to use a piece of 2x4 to make sure your jack doesn't scratch the car.

for jacking the rear, use round rubber hoisting pads just ahead of the rear wheels. for jacking the front, position jack under front frame rails rearward of front wheels. if you look at underside of frame rails you will see a triangle cutout. this is the jacking point.

For jacking up the rear I put the jack under the differential I put a hockey puck in the jack pan so there is no stress on the plastic cover. The puck works on the front frame rails too.

So you're saying the weight of your rear is supported by the differential case?

Yes, long enough to put the jack stands underneath. Have done this with every car I've ever owned both live axles and independent suspensions. Never had any leaks or problems. I've seen tire shops do the same to change the rears.
It's a PIA to jack up each side, If my jack would fit I'd place it under the front cross member.

I jacked up the car in the front on one side using the stock jack in the suggested jack position. ONce this is done you can wheel the floor jack under from the front of the car between the wheels. You can then get to the front cross member. HOWEVER i jacked it up on the front cross member and dented the damn cross member!! The car doesn't pull or anything but it did dent the metal pretty good! That metal is very thin...not at all as thick as it is on a chevy truck! So I don't know where in the front is a good place w/ a floor jack.. I jacked on the rear diff several times and had no problem there.

Just in front of the rear differential is a piece of the frame, a flat bar, that makes more sense as a jack position. A 2"x4" block of wood fits right in there to use with the jack. You can use that if the rear differential worries you.

This is the part I don't understand:

you put the floor jack under the front jack point on the driver's side, and jack the car up...

now where do you put the jack stand so that you can relocate the floor jack to the passenger's side jack point, so you can lift that side of the car?

or is this completely obvious to everyone but me?

One thing about this site is that you can never tell when a topic will be resurrected. I am finally at the point of preparing to paint calipers and am trying to decide the best way to lift the car. I am going to do front and back seperately. IDSmoker asked the question I am looking to answer. Any suggestions. I did look at the diagram from a previous post, but I am not sure I understand it completely.

I usually grab a bite with my floor jack just aft of the perscribed jack point, which is marked with a triangle on the frame rail. I then place my jack stand just forward of the floor jack, which places it just forward of the mark. Given the footprint of each, there is just barely enough room to do this...

    IDSmoker,
Just bring your ride over to my house when you want to put it in the air. The drive-on hoist works great. Also, want to get together for breakfast soon?
