Need help with an odd one

So I go to check my oil and the top plastic ring of the dipstick just snaps off. What is still in the tube is below the top lip and I can't get a grip on it with anything. Obviously the oil jockey at my dealer jammed the sucker way in last week when I had the oil changed. Any ideas on how to remove it so I can replace it? I'm currently waiting for some Crazy Glue to dry to see if it will hold long enough for me to pull it out but I don't think it will work. The sucker is really jammed in there and the plastic didn't break off cleanly either .... what a stupid design.

Can't get in there w/ super skinny needlenose or anything? What about like a bolt extractor, those bite pretty good and the twisting would probably help loosen the dipstick??? Otherwise, I'd say wait til you change the oil next (or do it now), just remove the tube and ram something in it going the other way. Tube comes off w/ a couple easy bolts.

Shop vac and seal it around the tube.

or take the PCV valve out and use compressed air to pop the stick out.

Have had this happen before in the past. Use some picks, needle nose pliers, and patience most of all. They can be stubborn sometimes.

I'm trying to picture what you have left.

Is there still some plastic left in the tube that is attached to the actual stick? Any way to possibly get a wood or self tapping screw to start into it and then pull out?

Get a new engine. Sounds pretty totalled to me. :D jk

Take it to the dealer... Drive right in to that service garage. They have a tool that can pull that out. That happened to a guy in the past. I can't find the thread.

You could also try a hemostat, which is the clamps doctors use to clamp blood vessels. They're like extremely narrow, light-weight needle-nose pliers. I have several and I can't tell you how often they've saved my butt.

As a last resort, you can pull the dipstick tube part of the way out and push the dipstick out from the bottom. Undo the bolt on the side of the block (from underneath) and the two bolts that hold it to the valve cover. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. The dipstick tube is going to have to be unbolted as suggested. What's left of the dipstick is jammed in hard, the top of it has nothing to grab onto and is below the top lip of the tube itself. The glue didn't work, it stuck pretty good but the dipstick was stuck harder. I don't want to bend or distort the tube and didn't want to try drilling it out for fear of going too deep and pushing a bunch of crap down the tube into the motor.

I'll hit the dealer's parts department tomorrow for a new dipstick and then try to get at it from the bottom.

Take a scrap piece of long, narrow metal with a hooked end and heat it up until it is glowing red.

Push it into the plastic part that is stuck in the tube, let it sit until cool.

Use some pliers to pull/twist out the plastic plug.

I had the same thing happen this past summer. Got the old dipstick out by running a short screw into the plastic. Pulled it out with pliers without getting any plastic debris in the engine.

    Ah, good one!

And the BT dipstick handle is a good one also, that is if the metal blade of the dipstick is not broken.
