May have to part with the Magnum

Well, isn't hindsight 20/20. I bought the Magnum 3 months ago, and my wife has decided this week to leave her job. I support her decision and could use the help with the kids. Being a fireman and working 24 hrs only to come home and care for 2 kids while my wife goes to work is hard on both of us. After 5 years I'm ready for a break!!

Anyway, the Magnum will most likely have to go. I may be able to squeeze an SRT4 into the budget. It's said when saving $150.00 per month on a car payment seems like a necessary thing to do. It will be a blood bath trading the R/T in, but the options seem pretty limited. I should have been a doctor!!

Anyone have a tip on a horse?????

Doesn't sound like you really need tips. You have your priorities in order. Family always comes first. There just isn't anything under the sun that's more important. I tip my hat to ya, man.
You may wanna try to sell it first. You'll get more than a dealer will give you and therefor have more to put towards that cool SRT-4. This'll keep yer payments to a minimum, pissibly allowing you to put some luv into it later on.
heck, I don't know you but I'm proud of you, man.
    props.

Thanks for the vote of support. I thought about the possibility of an outright sale, but the dealer will give me 26,500 (paid $30,000). The advantage is that trading down I avoid $1,400 in taxes, which almost erases any advantage to selling outright.

I could sell the Grand National, but that's paid for and I hate to do that to save a daily driver.

    Thanks

Sucks that you have to get rid of the Magnum, but like grinner said, it's nice to see someone with their priorities in order.

I personally think you'd be doing okay with the dealer at that price. To be honest I was thinking you'd be taking even more of a hit. Hold on to that Grand National if you can though - I would love to get my hands on one of those someday.

I agree, family is more important than a car. You can always pick up a used one in a couple of years. Sounds like you're getting a good deal on the tradein, doubt you'd see much more than that on a private sale. Maybe, but it'd take some luck, and likely some time.

If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?

Have you talked to a bank about refinancing it over a longer term? What would be worse? The hit you take on flipping it to something you don't really want, or having to take more time to pay for it?

Yeah, I had looked into that, but in my particular case there was no real incentive to do it.

One thing is for sure, I'll be burried in my next car, literally and financially.

What about leasing? If you don't drive too many annual miles it might cut a nice chunk outta your monthly payment (I wonder if the dealer could convert you to a lease).

There's many ways to "find" some monthly money -- check out www.Lowermybills.com

Insurance, mortgage, phone bills, groceries, etc.

My wife quit "formal" work quite some years ago to take care of the kids (believe me, she didn't quit WORK). Anyway, after the initial "panic" things worked out just fine.

God bless. You'll be fine too.

My wife has not worked outside the house in almost 6 years but she works with 2 children, one in diapers still. We too were kind of in money shock when she first stopped bringing home $$ but you know, you always seem to adjust no matter how much you make. The tax advantages alone are worth her staying home, being there for the kids is the greatest reward.

Dude don't worry about trading it in. Stay optimistic and hopefully one day you'll be getting a year one custom Magnum with all the fixin's! By then somebody will have modded it enough to give you a low 13/ high 12 second car!!!

I give you all the credit in the world. I've been surrounded by people who seem to think only of themselves and it's becoming hard to stomach. The SRT-4 is still a nice car. (So is the GN) Also commend you on being a firefighter. IMO it ranks right up there with those who are in the military...

With mommy home the kids would RARELY be in the car. Maybe a short hop to the store, that's it. Crossed my mind too though. The minivan is the family car. Daddy just needs a too and from car.

Hemi to 4cyl and no turbo....gulp. Now that's taking one for the team. I thought I'd be up for husband of the year by going from a Magnum to an SRT4, but an SXT would get me in for sure.

Point well taken, and I would certainly do whatever was necessary.

You guys are a good bunch. Don't make me sell that GN just so I can hang around here
