Thumbs down Long Island, NY Gas Milage

Any other HEMI guys on Long Island need your MPG numbers. I have a 2005 Magnum and I have not scene better then 13 mpg in and around Long Island. I dont beat on the car( 2-3k range on accelerating) cruise at 75mph's on the LIE and parkways, and always use Mobile / Exxon 89 Octane fuel. Have 28k miles. Best milage was a trip to Lake George and back avg MPG was 22mpg. This is all by math, no EVIC in teh car.

    Thanks.

I don't think this MDS works at all in these cars.

Fastest I ever cruised on the LIE was around 12 mph!

If you're calculating mileage based on how many gallons it takes to fill up, vs. how many miles since the last fill up, your 22 mpg trip was actually pretty high - and would suggest there's really nothing wrong with your car.

Ya, the kind of driving we do around here is not going to get us a very good gas mileage. I stopped looking at the mpg a long time ago

You said you dont beat on it well,If you drive these cars like a grandma its going to be a grandma car.You need to get on it the computer learns how you drive and detunes it self if you dont get on it now and then.I tried driving like that and had the same thing happen.Go out pull the #11 fuse with the car off,put it back in and go out and have some fun.Oh Yea I use 87 fuel and get 15-16 in town and 22-25hwy.Just tring to help.

I work on Long Island and live in Westchester. I commute back and forth daily in a V6 commuter car and only average 22 mpg. LI stinks for gas mileage....how the heck are you getting 75 mph on the LIE?

I'm down on the Island fequently.. I have seen almost 26 mpg cruising on LIE (according to evic) @ 75 so MDS does work...no traffic....might be the area you are driving in. I only use 93 octane...I feel the car is a little slug with 89 when you want to get on it. I have 38k on mine and did not do a spark plug change yet. When I drive like grandma around here i will see about 18+ avg (grandma sometimes steps on it )
and like Dave said get on it once in a while...

step up the octane for a couple weeks and see if it changes.

oh yeah....are you carrying excess junk in trunk?

I get between 24-27mpg on the LIE cruising at 75mph fro Exit 52 into Exit 29, but that's at 5:00 AM with no traffic. Are you in 5th gear ( auto-sticking) or in "D"? I use nothing less than premium fuel and Mobil1 every 4-5K miles. There are some elevations on parts of the LIE that look flat, and kill the mileage averages.

22 doesn't sound that bad, really. Don't know how familiar you are with things, so I'll state the obvious here, just in case (if you've already checked this or know this stuff, then just disregard):

Ensure you're using the correct grade oil (5w-20) or MDS won't work right. Please if you have a dealer do the change, make sure they're using the correct oil (used to be that they often didn't, but I think they're probably all on the right page by now.) Also, if you're using the autostick, MDS will not kick in. Only works in D.

With all the stop and go you see up in LI (like everyone in FL, I used to live in Long Island), I'm not surprised you feel the mileage is the pits.

I was working on the Island last year and reset my average when I filled up there. I got 11 for the remainder of the week. I had to get gas again before heading up the Taconic and went back to 26 for the trip home. Sounds like normal city mpg to me. Too much stopping and and then idling in first gear for a half mile, then a fast rip to 60, then repeat to get any decent miles out of a gallon, remember these things weigh over two tons BEFORE we put stuff in. There was this SHORT RIP TO 100 when a Ferreri scooted by, I swear he was afraid to hit the brakes cause I was a bit close!

The 22mpg on long trips I think is ok, but the local 12-13mpg is killing me. I use the right oil, car has plenty of power, but just drinks gas.

Have you changed the plugs yet?If you do I used Bosch Plat. 2 and have had great luck.I had 2 plugs go bad and only would get 10-12 mpg after the change back right up.

I have learned to ignore the MPG and just enjoy the car. I average about 18 to and from home and Farmingdale, where I work. Pretty good considering my Dad owns a 6 Cylinder Envoy that gets maybe 12.

Is this true> I never heard of a car detuneing itself? My charger has been feeling extremely sluggish these past few days, it is at dodge right now, they jsut called and said they cant find anything mechanically wrong with it.

My MPG on the island is not bad 18 city - and i got around 25 going up to foxwoods this weekend. I can live with that my trailblazer gets 12 MPG and thats a 6.
