    Iridium plugs.

I called a friend of mine yesterday to order me some KNG Iridium Plugs. Supposidely each 4 plugs would add about 5hp, so 10hp for about $100 is not bad at all I thought, not to mention better mpg.
Today I was at the dealer and I mentioned the plugs to him and he told me not to do it. He said he doesn't know why, but he gets so many service issues for plugs because owners would put on plugs other than the Champion stocks. Misfires and engine lights were very common. So being paranoid, I called my friend back and told him to hold off.
Any expert opinion on this? Anyone have any experience with the Iridium Plugs, or any other Plugs?
    thanks

chrysler now uses NGK plugs. never heard of iridium plugs, so i can't comment. your hemi has 16 plugs, so you better double that cost.
Izzy pics money talks. unfortunately, mine usually says... "good bye!"

Yeah, but now he would gain 20 horsepower, no?

I'll start by saying I don't know squart.

However, others do, and they have posted on plugs before. Try doing a search on Iridium spark plugs... you may find the answers you seek.

I have a Honda S2000 and a lot S2000 owners use Denso Iridium plugs (http://www.densoiridium.com/ir_power.php). They are supposed to run cooler and give a hotter spark than platinum plugs, but I haven't tried them so I can't speak from experience. They are pricey at $12.00 each. The S2000 only takes 4 but the Hemi takes 16 and my math says that is $192.00 plus tax for spark plugs!

5 Horses for every 4 plugs that comes out to 20hp. I'm really skeptical about gaining 10 or 20 horses from changing sparkplugs.

Your sparkplug cannot put out more energy than it recieves from the ignition system.

Even the most woopy-ding-dong fancy pants plugs do the very same thing that a barbecue grill ingiter does. It is a flame kernel generator.

    #3:
The only way that you will get 10hp increase from a plug swap is if the ones that they replaced were fouled badly or really left field wrong choice.

    #4:
Those 6000+ HP monsters in top fuel dragsters use fairly plain jane plugs.

In short, I smell a fishing lure in this one!

    Hammer,

    I mostly agree with everything.

    1. I agree, it can't put out more energy that sent to it, but that does not mean every plug utilizes all that energy well.

    2. Not all sparks patterns are the same. Some light the fuel better than others.

Having said all that I can't believe that replacing the stock spec plugs with fancy ones will buy you more than a couple of hp. They may last longer. maybe.

Denso Iridium plugs work great on supercharged or turbo motors and yes they will give a bit more power in my experience over new NGK platinum . On a Mazda v6 2.5l I got about 5 more hp on dyno and supercharged Toyota v6 3.4l over 9 hp over fresh NGK's. Why ,damned if I know? However I dont think they make a plug for our hemi's. Advance Auto Parts sold me 32 Denso IK16's to fit my Magnum and 2005 hemi Ram. No way , do not fit Ram at least. Champions are much longer. Iwill check Magnum when I put on headers next week. I think the 2003 hemi's that call for IK16's had different heads. As I have almost 30k on Magnum I will replace Champions with NGK's if avaiable. While I pretty much agree with Rev. about plugs, some motors are very fussy as to plugs. Mazda rotarys that I have owned and raced, would only run well on NGK'S . Some would barely run on Champions. Ihave a Case rough terrain forklift that will only run on NGK's. Ihad a MGB that would only run well on Champions, of course there were no Japanese plugs around back in 1971. No doubt todays ignition systems are hotter too and computer managed motors run more opimum air/fuel ratios.

You might all be right, but this is what I was told: Platinum plugs generate a clean consistant spark and iridium plugs do a completely different thing. I was told that they create a fireball spark, which is more intense and more likely burn all the fuel inside.
Well I know nothing about car tech, so I just believe anything a socalled expert says :P
    thanks for the feedback

Installed Bosch Platinum plugs in my Passat to replace the stock NGK plugs. Didn't notice any hp gain, but fuel economy sure went up.

I am sure the plug manufacturers have made great strides in improving plugs since my racing days. We always used an old set to warm the engine up and then change to a new set each race day. Back then (more than 20 years....no more than 30 years ago) spark plug efficiency deteriorated quite rapidly as evidenced in our speeds/times. It was always more effective to put a better coil on to get a hotter spark. Also, on airplanes we always found that AC platinums were far superior to Champion or Autolite platinums. Don't know if that's true today though, especially with all the new brands that are probably better than them all. Currently I've been using Bosch platinums in everything I own.

Guys, stop falling for this magic gimmicky stuff that keeps coming out like the super expensive, fancy plugwires, gas magnets, splitfire/iridium plugs or the tornadoair stuff. If you want to part with your money, send it my way. Now we may find that a heatrange cooler plug is a good thing with certain mods but really the only other choice should be copper or platinum. Platinum last longer but in some situations don't perform as well. Other than that, stockers are where it's at for now. That's about it.

The Hemi engineers gave the engine 2 plugs per cylinder.

There ain't no raw fuel slippin' by those 2 sparkys!

Until somebody proves to me that they can improve on performance, I'll stick with the factory setup.

Never give the competition an inch
