    Header install prob

Everything went quick and smooth today. Sounds mean and, man you otta hear these things with open headers! Sounds nice with the magnaflows too. The tips look fantastic and painting the cans black was certainly the right thing to do for my car. I got great footage and it'll make a fine DVD.
The computer is not learning the mods though. Won't keep an idle at all.. just keeps dying when ya aint steppin on it. They think it's an o2 sensor. Battery was unhooked and rehooked, they did their compter reset thang and in the mornin it's getting flashed.
Anybody have tips to look out for?
    thanks in advance.
    tired and frazzled
gonna hit the hay and take er home tomorrow.

Good going on the headers, Grin. Real drag about the bug though. It'll all get worked out. Can't wait for your video.

I get my headers installed Saturday morning 8:00am! Can't wait. I have read that the sensors must be dremeled (however you spell it) somehow to make it fit properly. My guys at www.headersystems.com say they got it handled so I'm off to Dallas! 35 HP more on the way home! I'll let you know how it goes and I'm videoing the install as well and will post the link to the video when I finish editing. Hey Grinner I use Avid Pro what do you use?

    Later,

    PappaDoc

Check O2 connections and check that the sensors haven't been munged up in some way. Make sure none of the plug wires are frying on the headers (common issue in the GM world - dunno if it is or not on these cars). Make sure all the plug wires are securely on the plugs. I would think it would still idle though if one of the plug wires were off, just not great...

You do know that these headers are on a Hemi engine right? If he had to remove the plug wires or the plug wires are touching the headers he has a bigger problem.

If it keeps dying out, that sounds like there's another sensor that hasn't been put back right.

thanks guys, we'll check it all this mornin'.
pappadoc, I have an Avid Symphony.
Can't wait to see your video. Maybe we can work something out so that you can send me clones or copies of your raw footage. It may make for something that looks like a two camera shoot.
    thanks again, all.

Well, he was asking for suggestions and I was just trying to be helpful. Like I said in the post, I wasn't sure if it would be an issue on this car or not. I haven't bothered to take off the engine cover on mine yet to closely inspect it, but from the pictures I've seen it looks like frickin spaghetti in there. Didn't seem completely ouside the realm of possibility that clearances might be different with headers and something might be getting fried. When we put headers on my other car (which also has individual coil packs), we absolutely unhooked the plug wires and removed the coils so that we could get to the header bolts. Again, didn't seem completely ouside the realm of possiblity that one might have to do the same thing on this engine. If I'm an idiot though, I guess I'm an idiot. :|

Hey grinner, I remember reading another post either on this forum or another about those o2 sensors and the same problem your having. It was found that the o2 sensors don't sit correctly in the header. Like pappadoc said you have to dremel the header for them to seat correctly. Good luck.

Make sure all of the sensors on the intake side and around the throttle body are plugged in. Though this is a MAP car and not mass-air, could be a culprit.

No worries. :D I was feeling a little cranky this morning myself and probably read more into your post than what was there. The internet is notorious for that. Hope you got your intake sorted out, and grinner, hope they figure out what wire is loose.

Is there any sort of idle relearn procedure with these cars? I have to go through a whole process with my other car whenever I reflash the PCM or have the battery unhooked for more than a few minutes

    Grinner,
If you still are having problems, please give me a call. I'm sure it's something simple or maybe your computer is just in shock having to learn the new setup. Hopefully the flash will correct everything. Are you getting the CEL accompanying the stall?

Turned out that bad welding on the magnaflow kit was the culprit.
I mentioned when the kit first came in the the welding job was shotty. Lots of welding splatter all over the cans and even some on the tips. I painted the cans flat black and spent hours cleaning up the tips without scratching them up.
The problem with the car dieing ended up being some of that welding splatter from the magnaflow kit on the inside losening up, flying back and wedging itself in the sensors. There is a little flap somewhere in there too that was wedged open. This is what was making the car die. It thought it was at full throttle.
They were cleaned out and the car runs like a dream.
What a wonderful process. Check it out:
I ordered the stuff through highhorseperformance.com who took outstanding care of me. Great customer service, great prices and top notch to deal with. I learned about jet coating in the process and decided to have it done. The headers showed up and not only will they keep my engine cooler the the hot jet, MAN they are beautiful. Look like they were dipped in chrome and they will nevr tarnesh or rainbow from heat. I had the install done at King Dodge in St Louis, MO. Again, grade A, top notch customer service. I just can't say enough about Lou Espey, the service manager. He gave me a hell of a deal on the install, allowed me to shoot the install on video, riding the tech's back (thanks Greg, you so rule), insisted that I take his Charger to lunch, then hooked me up with a Hemi Ram truck last night when they had to keep my car over night. No big mod goes down perfect (and I combigned two at once) and if not for the little metal weld balls that Magnaflow blessed me with, this one would have been perfect. Turned out great.
Props and thanks to all of those involved.
I hope to finish the DVD next week. The first three go to Lou and Greg at King Dodge and to Joshua at highhorseperformance.com. Otta be available on my website soon following and I'll post little samples of it exclusivley here on lxforums.com.

It's now impossible to drive slow. Every green light looks like a tree cuz even when I slowly start givin' it gas, it sounds mean and it then demands more throttle. I simply have to oblige. The tips look awesome too. Make my wife's stock R/T tips look like little toyota tail pipes. She's now screamin' for magnaflows. I'll have to steer her toward flowmasters from highhorseperformance.
    (then trade her)
