gosh dang frickin piece of crap factory oil filter

what the heck does the factory do put locktite on the threads of the factory filter? i mean my wife talked me into doing it myself, even though gut told me to let someone else do it for the first oil change.. and here it is almost 24 hours later and i have no oil in the crankcase and a destroyed factory installed filter that wont come loose. how in the hell can i get it out? i used the end cap oil filter wrench, as well as the trusty old school screwdriver through the side of the case and neither of them worked..... GRRRRRRR

since it was your wife's idea, get her to remove it.

if it's that far gone, you may have to chisel it off. just be careful not to damage the mating surface.

Use a band type of wrench and put it as close to the base as posible. Use an extender handle if possible to get more leaverage. Put hard even pressure on it and it will come off. Oil changing is what I do for a living and believe me all autos with the first oil change is bitch. BTW make sure that the rubber gasket comes off with the filter or you will have a bigger mess.

i checked all the parts stores around here that are open and none of them have the "spider filter wrench" or the band strap type of filter wrench that uses a ratchet instead of that goofy flimsy handle that bends.

I think they use impacts set to 200PSI and filters coated in JBWeld.

Worse comes to worse....you can use a good ol leather belt to do the same thing. Also, a chisel and a hammer close to the base. Or large locking pliers. A few ideas...???

ive done it twice. its insane how tight they are. i have a strap oil filter remover. its a post that your ratchet/extension goes into and theres a nylon "belt" around it. its flexible so you dont have have to have a hard service to grip like most removers. simple design and works wonders.

hummm Hit the Gym more ??

I had to fight with the first one as well, think the guy at the plant used a 3ft cheater bar to install them.

As I recall I drove a screwdrive through it and broke the tention then used the big jawed oil filter wrench plyers on it.

DTA - I like that strappy wrench thingie, where did you find that ?

The nylon strappy wrench thing you can get at Advance Auto Parts. I have one and it works great for stubborn filters. It leaves a good dent in the side when it comes off, but it comes off.

i stole mine from my dad many years ago :D we put in large generators and i think it came with one of the kits. im sure you can find them at most auto stores though. looks pretty cheap. whats nice is that you can use extensions and it doesnt need a real solid filter to grab and stay on.

Yep, those 3.7L, 4.7L, and 5.7L oil filters are put on WAY TOO TIGHT at the factory. Like what NC-SXT said, as close to the base as possible... if you have a base left to turn. Put the band wrench on, twist the band so it is snug on the filter with the handle in a position to push it until it turns. You might want to try snaking your hands down through the top to push it. Better yet, have your wife hold the strap snug from the bottom so you can reach down from the top and push it. She just has to keep the wrench from falling down and resnug it everytime until it is loose enough. It would be a little easier up on a lift, but you obviously don't have that luxury. Good luck.
