    gas gauge

call me crazy, but i just wanted to lay it down on the line and see if i am crazy. Does the gas gauge seem to be a lil lop sided? i mean i get 200 miles from the the first half of my tank then 50-75 out of the second half Does the gauge read wrong well atleast proportionally. thanx for your input

Most manufacturer's do that on purpose. GM started the practice a few decades ago. Their gauges used to read out in a linear fashion so that if you had a 20 gallon tank 3/4 meant you had 15 gallons left. But what happened was that as soon as people left the gas station and drove like 50 miles the needle would drop and that created the perception the car was using gas fast. GM fielded so many complaints about it they changed the needle so that it doesn't really move much off of F for the first couple of gallons.

Obviously that throws everything off. In many cars when the needle shows 1/2 it is really closer to 1/3 gas left.

Another problem is some gauges will read empty even if you have a gallon or so left. I guess they do that to prevent people from running out of gas. I have a Ford that shows bone dry E and it still has at least 2 gallons left in it.

I guess you have to run it out to 0 one day to find out how much is really left!

Heres my trick: I fill it up just before hitting the E...seems to work and havent run out of gas yet  heh. But I guess there are some situations that knowing exactly how much further you really can go can be helpful.

This does bring up a good question: "How far can you go after the warning light comes on before you are completely dry?" Such information would be helpful to all owners. Any Krammers out there willing to test the limit? Go where no one has gone before?

Just fill it up as soon as the warning light comes in and subtract the number of gallons filled from your tank capacity.

Grinner ran out of gas while he had some fuses yanked - didn't appear to harm his car.

Just a chuckle...When I first met Ex-wife, she started to let me drive her Mustang King Cobra. She warned me not to let the gas gauge fall below 1/2 a tank. Of course I had to enquire as to why. She told me that when it's full, the needle doesn't move for a long time, and it gets really good gas mileage, and when it gets below a 1/2 tank, it gets really poor mileage, as the needle goes really fast. Tried to explain how gas gauges work. She didn't believe me. Just shook my head.

OK. Here's another. After I moved out, she called and asked me where the furnace was? She wanted to change the filter. I almost fell on the floor as I explained that the house has electric base board heat, thus there is no furnace. Is there any question as to why I divorced her? Hey...this could be the topic of a new thread. "Stupid things my spouse did."

I ran out about 2nd week I had my RT -- was coming back from a 200 mile roundtrip -- had the stereo blaring -- was on a major tollroad (Houston) and went to punch it to blow by a SLOWPOKE and -- pfffffffffft -- NOTHING!!!!

I quick saw the gas IDIOT light, and quick realized I was right at an exit ramp, and LUCKILY (I was going fast enough) coasted down the exit and into a gas station (WHEW).

To this day, I swear the last 1/4 tank goes like lightning -- but I don't take any chances. (BTW -- no damage to the Fuel pump).

Hey hey hey I'm a blonde. And I don't think I'm dumb if I can trick a man into doing something for me.
My husband is very good at constructing things & mechanics. I on the other hand am Queen and ruler of the computer equipment. It makes us a good team. But I don't think he ever totally believed me when I told him our Blazer had a far larger top half of the gas tank than bottom half. Thanks, I'm not crazy. (well maybe but not about that)
