    Bypass Oil Filter

I am wondering if anyone has installed one of these on their car and if so which kit did you go with. I tried searching the forums but could not find anything. Thanks

I'm not sure if his Magnum will fit in my parking space.

Time out... you want to bypass the oil filter? Ummmmm..... I can only guess that you're hoping to do this only at the track to buy yourself an extra 0.25 horsepower... and all I can say is, really?

nah SuperT ... he means put an extra oil filter that will filter down the oil to a finer micron level than the factory filter ...

full flow oil filter, something like 20 micron ..bypass oil filter 5 micron ...

he's looking to save engine parts ... i assume you just read it too fast.

Didn't read too fast, just doesn't say anything like that in the post. I've never heard of a bypass oil filter - ya learn something new every day :-)

cool beans, i just wanted to make sure I publically gave you the benefit of doubt ...

bypass oil filters are pretty common in the diesel world (one of my other obsessions) to extend oil life as well as remove particulate debris at smaller levels than regular oil filtration would.

The theory being that the smaller the particle that is captured by the filter, the smaller the overall damage to the engine, reducing engine wear.

The side benefit of this is, the smaller the particulate one captures by filtering the less total number of particulates one would have in the system. ... i.e. snowball effect.

    back on topic

knightrider, I've searched a few times on here as well and haven't found anything specific that I remember. I know of a few companies a basic kit could be modified to fit our application...

    AMSoil
    Oilguard
    FS2500 (filtration solutionsww.com)

I know there are more ... I'll have to think and post up later.

Looking at Amsoil's kits... so you basically remote mount your regular filter in parallel w/ a finer filter?

ya i would have to say bad product naming, but its not to bypass the main filter...sorry about confusion

also you dont have to remote mount the main filter, some kits have a adapter that allows you to keep main filter in factory location.

my main question about it is where do you run the return to...seen a couple how-to's that run it back to oil pan, but also read that yyou dont want to do that. thanks for the help

one of the best ideas i've seen is to run the return "clean" oil directly to the oil filler cap ... two ways to do that ... tap the current plastic one, or a much better way, is to have BT make one up for you that's pre-tapped.

Well it looks like the kit that also relocates the factory filter includes supply and return lines to a block that goes where the filter normally would, so your'e covered on both ends. No?

Yes you would be covered on both ends with that setup. AMSoil's kits (as do many other bypass oil filtration kit makers) run that way and also by T-ing off the port for the oil pressure sensor depending on the application.

sorry no pics for show and tell ... yet ...

    we do

we have run these kits for many years on our service trucks. The technology came from big rigs.

Basically, a regular oil filter can never be too efficient because of the volume of oil it must pass. The bypass filter flows a very SMALL amount but filters it very clean. Super clean.

So you need both. You really should run oil analysis to figure out when to change the oil. Otherwise you are just guessing. You can go a LONG time without an oil change with this setup.

I was going to run one of these if we couldn't hook up both of my oil coolers. I already have a sandwich adapter running to a stacked plate cooler, and I was adding the Mopar police oil cooler. To stack a filter on top of that, we thought it would be too much. Turned out it worked fine. IIRC all the parts -- hoses included -- were sourced at Summit. Earls Plumbing for the bypass and remote mount, with Summit braided hose and -10AN fittings, IIRC.
