Blown R/T Tranny - How common?

About a month ago, had some bucking coming from my 05 R/T tranny at low rpm under load. Took to dealer, who flashed PCM and seemed fine. It was actually a condition that was present about 4 days before I took to dealer, and by the time I had appointment it had actually stopped. Paid the deductible fee, and she seemed to be fine.

Then, last week, had the dreaded P0700 code come on after hearing loader 'siren' type sounds coming from the tranny. She went into limp mode, I pulled over, put into park, then back into drive and she was went into gear, and I got her home. Made appointment for next day, and drove it to work (only 3 miles from house). ON way home, she's slipping really bad and barely limp home. Well next day I limp her to the dealer and it actually dies right in front.

Anyway, bottom line, dealer tries to test run it and it strands them - they get back to shop, check usual stuff I guess - and then start tearing it apart. Calls me up says need whole new tranny, will take a week (3-4 days to come in, 1 day install). Good news is that its all under warranty (yay for 7yr 70k)

I tried looking around some threads to see if this was common to our cars and did not see a lot to indicate so.

I don't really beat on her too much, few brake stands here and there and some wet road burnouts - but I really don't drive her too hard. Not many mods except and sweet grille from one the members here and a mopar CAI.

Anyway, was curious what you guys thought about issues with the tranny in general. Should I be worried about a new one going in? Will car ever really be the same?

There was a TSB out a couple years ago about water getting in the trannies..........this sounds alot like that.If you search on that you may have something to go to them and say why didn't you check for this?

At this point, if he's getting a new tranny then the TSB is irrelevant. Just my $.02

regarding your worries on whether or not the car will be the same,
youre fine, if not better off
a brand new tranny (and i assume youre over 36k)... man im kinda jealous haha. its not like frame damage or something, youre in a good place, aside from being out of the car for a few days. that alone is a bit depressing :(

just recently I thought the same thing. notice any fluid under the tranny on the pan? I had my front seal and pump on the tranny go out but luckly I kept adding lucas to it. I made out and nothing else went out on the tranny also added a 2800 stall because of it.

    low miles--

Hi Guys... thanks for the replies---

There was no sign of tranny fluid on garage floor. About six months after I got in 06', there was a tranny leak (as indicated by an early TSB) which I took to the dealer to correct. I though that TSB was related to gasket and something about water getting into the tranny (I forget actual details).

Regarding the miles, the car only has 27k miles on it. Fortunately, my office is 3 miles from my house.

Also, do you guys know if the tranny vin #s are stamped? My brother who is a Mopar collector (lucky dog has two 69 Daytonas) was busting my chops now about having a non-matching numbers car now....

If you're worried about the strength of the tranny, don't be. No body has blown one up yet due to power and there are some really strong cars here like 730+ rwhp= almost 1000 flywheel hp.

WOW! what calculation are you using to get 1000 BHP from 730 RWHP? I think the LX has an estimated loss of 17-18% but that applies to stock BHP. More BHP does not equate more drivetrain loss.
Glad to hear your getting a new tranny NJ MAG

Hi guys, first i want to say im not one for posting much mostly because ive been a bit embarrased of my mag. She has had many problems and i just had to tell you all about this one. i love my Mag and this website is the best, it has helped me tremendously. Njmag i blew my tranny at about 32k miles, i now have 53k on her and she is strong as hell. i live in PA and drive roughly 120 miles each way to work every morning. while traveling on the BQE one morning, my mag made a horrible noise out of nowhere from my trans. the kind of noise that makes your eyes pop wide open and sends your spine into attention. at the same time i lost power and said verry grimly " OH NOOO". i crept over to the side of the road that usually doesnt even exist on that highway, and i was done. limp mode got me another 100 yards. then i heard it again... that sound, grinding, screeching, clanking horror. i shut her down and called for a tow. after being stranded in Brooklyn for two days the dealer said they had to do some type of flash or something to do with programming. great, i think things are well again and drive away to get stuck again 5 miles away from the dealer. so again the Mag is on a flat bed going back to the dealer. Not a pleasant sight if its ever happened to you, especially if its twice in one week. Another two days go by and this time they say theyve changed out my torque converter. i explained to them that nothing could have survived the ungodly sounds i heard that tranny make. i was concerned about engine damage as well. They assured me at the dealer that my Mag was now in perfect condition and that i had no worries. Well... i made it back to PA but got stuck on some side road in the middle of nowhere. 10:30 at night, no cell reception, and not even a star out to see 5 feet in front of me....stuck. Some time around 130 am, two good ole boys in a pickup drive by and give me a ride to an area where i could get cell reception and they offered a few cold ones that were well needed at this point. The Mag had to be left alone on the side of the road over night for the first time ever because there were no tow truck services open. of course not, i was in the middle of nowhere. i get to the Mag the next morning and get to watch her put on a flatbed for the third time in a week... great, just great. Scranton Dodge winds up holding on to the car for almost 5 weeks waiting for parts. i made 20 phone calls atleast to find out why its taking so long. into the fifth week i call again on monday morning to see if the parts are in and if she will be ready anytime soon. they tell me theyre still waiting for a part from someplace accross the country. Ok, now i get intouch with someone at corporate office and explain the whole story.. and there is more, im giving the condensed version. she tells me she will call the dealership and get to the bottom of this asap. i figure, yea right. well 20 minutes later she calls back and says " pick up your car tomorrow afternoon. not only that, she refunds me a months payment, $525. i think when i told her i went out and bought something relaible to get to work in ( a chevy cobalt) she got pissed and determind. i use the cobalt now as my commuter cause i cant see beating up my precious Mag in Manhattan. The Mag gets driven on the weekends now and i drive her kind of hard, border line abbusive sometimes and she seams to be getting better and better. i think they dumped a brand new trans in cause i t took about 7k miles to run strong again. that experience left me a little shell shocked and i was not confident in that car for some time. again, ive had lots of problems with my early build 05 awd Rt, but the tranny isnt something i worry about anymore. car has 53k and tranny only has 20k. so to answer your question... i wouldnt worry about it, ide be pumped i got a new tranny.

No doubt these trannies can take a beating.....like over 300 passes worth of give it all you got, plus 90K street miles with no problems so far on the 300C. But start applying 600rwhp and above you will find its weak point. I am on my second tranny due to a 3rd gear giving it up....likely due to a sprag failure. I can already feel this second tranny is only going to last so long.

Next stop, unless I win the lottery and buy an already built one, is looking into the Mercedes parts catalog to see what parts they are putting behind the 722.1 used in the most powerful AMGs.
