    Torque converter shutter

    I have been getting a very intermitent tire vibration
    I have reported it to my dealer when I have them do a oil,lube and filter change
    They have test driven the car, rebalanced tires, rotated tires and convrted the tires to NITROFIL - Still I get the same vibration on a random basis
    When I last visited the dealer and complained of the vibration again the service manager said "it is probably torque converter shutter
    I did not want to hear that because the torque converter TSB (dip stick tube water migration) was performed on this tranny in my first week of ownership
    The service manager said "let me know if it gets any worst and we will write it up" - NOW I'M NERVOUS
    Has anyone out there had this same problem

    If you have water in there it will do that. If you do and they give you any guff give me a call and we'll talk.

    Does it feel like driving over bumpitybump lane seperaters?

    Is it only in certain gears?

    Thanks for the come back Stroguy
    The vibration is totally random and feels more like an out of balance tire in the rear axle (you feel it in the seat, not the steering wheel)
    To be honest, I was surprised when the service manager said torque convert

    I'm having vibrations too under light to med loads above 40 mph usually and it changes character when the rear end moves over a bump that bounces the rear of the car some. I'm a lowered KW V2 300 SRT with DSS 1000 HP Axles. With heavy passengers or a loaded trunk I hear a lot of noise from the axles like it's from the CV joints or something. The vibration I feel in the seat and it feels like its from the converter (ProTorque 2800), except when I bounce the rear and it feels different. Now I suspect driveline or axles. Driveline bolts look tight and even and all looks normal when I spin it around with the tranny in neutral. I didn't put a wrench on the bolts, but they were just tighted to spec after the axle install in February. Nothing is sheared there like others have reported. I'm going to raise the car up some when I do the slotted rotor upgrade and new pads.

    Anyone else having issues?

    Anyone running DSS Axles with lowered KW V2 suspension? I've got 20K on my suspension and at least 8K on the axles so far, with the vibration going on for the last 3K miles.

    It's easy to "feel" the torque shudder. (I'm an expert on this one having gone back about nineteen times for it). Here are two simple tests:

    Start the car and then place the car in "D". Now lift your foot from the brake but do not press the gas. Your car should pull away smoothly. (Mine does a funky shuddering all the way up to about 10 km/h) It can be repeated every time and is quite relaible to "feel" the shudder.

    Now for washboard, SLOWLY accelerate your car beyond 70 km/h as you approach 80 you'll feel it come on. If you are too fast with the gas the shudder will last about 2 seconds but if you are really smooth and deliberately increase the speed as you pass 79-82 the car will shake like it was driving on a washboard gravel road.

    How to fix it? I dunno, the dealer keeps screwing me around and I don't know Funky well enough to tell him to slap the SM! What I do is simply don't accelerate slowly. When you pull out from a light PUNCH IT! When you are speeding up to get on the highway, Giv'er! Where it really hurts is when trying to hold 80 KM/h on a secondary road. THAT takes skill my friend. With the car rolling into and out of the shudder based on the "partial lock up" of the torque converter. I have read that some people burn out their TC within a few thousand but i'm on almost 40,000 with this shudder I guess I'm not the lucky one.

    i think I may have the "shudder" when I drvie around 40 with very light gas peddle presure going up a slight hill i get funny
    shudder feeling we all have the 7/70 drivetrain dose this get fixed for free under that coverage?

    I purchased my 2006 back in April of 2005 and the shutter appeared almost immediately. I took it to the dealer and they flushed the transmission and replaced the fluid. After about 2 weeks, the shutter reappeared. I took it back to the dealer and he replaced the entire torque converter. No problems since (35000 miles later).

    Torque converter shutter

    I'm back in the shop for the second time this month for the torque converter shutter, (rumble strips on the highway feel). First time they had a hard time figuring it out, and I brought the torque converter TSB to their attention. They replaced the torque converter, and filled with new fluid, and it was good for about 3 weeks. Now it's back at the dealership going on 10 days now, and they are waiting on parts to put in a new tranny (or whatever) (gear assemblies are what he said are on backorder.) It's under warranty. I have the HD tow prep and I tow a 3500 pound camper about once a month. I would think that these would be unrelated, but you never know...

    My question is this: Will a rebuild of the tranny be sufficent? Should I get an aux tranny cooler after this is all fixed to prevent the problem again for towing sake to be safe?

    on my 46rle trans i had the same thing... rumble strip feeling..

    Turns out a snap ring failed in the trans and killed the TC and galled up a bunch of crap before it made its way to the magnet in the sump. They say its a pretty common problem with the trans.

    Yeah I get a shudder but a hesitation along with it. I also get a wheel vibration at about 60mph everyday for the first 5 miles or so then suddenly its perfect at all speeds. I blamed the 22" tires getting flat spots from sitting overnight. Anyone?

    I had my converter replaced in april or may and now im getting the symptoms again.2 1/2 years ago i had the water in the tranny, and it seemed to me it acted differently.

    I had the "Shutter". They did the flush,but the damage was done.
    Next the tranny and the converter shot craps.
    They rebuilt the tranny and replaced the converter.
    I asked why not a new tranny?
    They said it was standard procedure to rebuild the tranny if the cost was less than %80 of a new one.
    The rebuilt tranny made it 800 miles before it cooked.
    This time I was above the %80 rule.



    Note in the last pic the pan is full of metal shavings.


    That was 25,000 miles ago. So far no more shutter.
