    rear backup sensors....question..

I have the OEM rear back up sensors... does anyone know if it is possible to add 2 more sensors to the system and have it work properly? I am considering adding one sensor on each side that would be on the corners as recently my dealer backed my car into a pole because of the blind spot caused by the rear roof pillar......

any one know if adding the extra sensors would cause an issue?

Also... Has anyone considered putting them on the front of the car?

I have thought about the tv to go, putting in a rear view camera, and having the "rear" sensors on the front.

Are they activated by speed or by the reverse switch

You could use a couple of alarm proximity sensors, a couple of relays & a piezo beeper....kind of crude, but effective.

Or, if the dealer is replacing the bumper cover, have them move two sensors to the outside, maybe?

IIRC, the factory park assist module can accept up to ten sensors. never tried to add more than the original four.

it is powered by the back-up lamp circuit.

i'm sure you could make it work on the front. would need a different power source.

Yeah, lemmie tell ya... when you DO hear that crunching and your rear fascia is cracked, your taillight is obliterated, and your quarterpanel has a little fold in it, you'll not want to go that route anymore!!

Im all up for installing this in the magnum, I noticed the new 7 BMW and other big $$ cars have them in the front and in the back. I am thinking about how to do this mod also. Thanks Chicken for the info. Need to figure out if I can wire a stock kit or the best thing would be go aftermarket. ^&^

What distance is it set for? The BMW is tied to speed, so when manuvering around a parking lot, its on, but not in traffic...

That was gonna be my question... how does it know when to come on? That's going to make the front install a little more tricky... you'd probably be best off just using a switch to interrupt power to the sensors. The question would be can you do that or do you have to use a switch (or separate relay) for each sensor.

About how much do these go for? Mine didn't come with one, but after a scary incident on the way to Vegas last month, I want one as my next mod.

The first lamp brightens at around 6 to 8 feet or so. And since this is fixed, not speed-related, if you're backing up at anything but a crawl about the only thing these will do for you is cause you to hit the object all tensed up instead of relaxed.

So, if you're going to rely on the parking assist system to avoid hitting something behind you, back up very slowly keeping one eye on the lights above the rear window.

If you're waiting for an audible tone as your initial indication of an object behind you're in deep trouble - you're scant inches from contact when the aural tone sounds.

Note: For those with any form of hearing difficulty there is a TSB (free of course) for those wishing the audible warning to be louder. The controller is replaced with a new one and the audible warning is, in fact, louder. No other differences. Simply advise your service writer that you have trouble hearing the parking assist aural warning and he'll take care of you.

The front ones should be 3x more powerful so that when you're at speed they show a number of how many seconds at the current speed until impact (hehehehehehe).

If it goes to infinity, you're fine, but if you start seeing real numbers better start hitting them brakes!

Cars with parking sensors should display some sort of "jackpot" message when the driver ignores them and hits something.

    Not very funny is it.
