Well its time to replace the brake pads, but the issue is that I have heard that you should only replace them with OEM pads or they will squeek really bad. Has anyone else heard this?

That's not entirely true.
First, there are a variety of brake pads. (Do a forum search on brake pads. You'll want to compare semi-metallics and ceramics, each has different characteristics depending on your driving requirements). Personally, I like semi-metallics because my driving is 50/50 street and highway.
Second, when changing brake pads you'll need to have your rotors turned and cut (normal procedure if not changing rotors). Dealer service shops are typically equipped to do this. If you go somewhere else, ask if they can turn and cut your rotors on the premises.
Third, new pads need a break-in period, after which the pads need to be bedded to the rotors. (Do a forum search on bedding brakes). This is a process of quickly heating and cooling the pads/rotors in rapid session.
I hope this helps.
$289 for just the front pads installed is crazy!
