    Welded Rear Ends

OK, SO most people I talk to about this are ether 100% No or 100% hell ya.

I have some good boy that tell me they drive the Chevys every day with a welded rear and it causes them no gref, except during hard 90 degree turns. In wich the rear tire will skipp and make a screaching noise.

One of them has is 07 corvett rear welded and took me for a ride, it did not seem bad, It only made the sound one time while trying to make a sharp parking turn.

I know it can cause more stress on the rear parts, but will DSS axles Im not to concerned.

Has anyone done this in a LX????

Im willing to weld my SRT8 rear up, while haveing my gears installed, but I would like to have a spair open diff locker (insides) just incase I don't like it.

Please include your exsperance, I know some will say get the 09 getrack, or a $1200 quaife, or a $$$$ Locker, but I already have DSS axles and I am not going to speend that kind of cash for a rear locker!!!!

SO if you have some experaces or something isitefull please let us all in.

    Thanks IRON MIKE

Try backing out of your driveway and turn out to pull away. It may tend to go straight.
highly difficult to turn when backing

Don't weld the rear......especially on the street. There are guys with much more power running on open differentials with no issues.A spool is not necessary.

Imagine going 60mph down a country road in the rain... You go around a corner and your rear end passes you...

... Or you could weld your diff into a spool and experience it.

Not a good idea. Either the inside wheel has to spin a bit to keep up with the outside wheel, or the outside wheel has to skid a bit to slow down to the speed of the inside wheel. Either way, you don't want it happening around a corner in the rain.

I had a 72 Pontiac LeMans with built 455 and a welded rear end. The car ran high 12's with a 3.07 gear and a TH350 w3k stall. Worked great at the track but drove me nuts on the street with wheel hop. The rear end finally broke on the street. It might not be as bad with the independant rear, but I wouldn't do it.

    Yep, I did it

Still have it in the garage

But never drove far on the street.

It was an experiment before we had DSS axles. I wanted to see if we sent the power to both wheels equally then maybe the axles would hold up, since I had already broken 2 at $300 a pop. 2nd or third launch I still broke an axle. Good news was that I was able to drive off the track under my own power.

As far as using it on the street, it depends on how you will use the car. If you drive it daily then it will probably tick you off. The tires will skip every once in a while for any diff in wheel diameter and Slalom driving will be horrible. Good news is that that the tires will make lots of screeching sounds which will make the car sound faster to others and donuts will be more fun. What is your intended purpose?

Lincoln Lockers are definetly not for the street.
not only will you get the massive understeer, but say you road race, take the twisties, or what not, that inside tire of the turn you are trying to make will get alot of wear since it will be spinning at the same speed as the outside tire, open diff, LSD, or a regular locker it doesnt do it.

then there is the issue of the durability of the welded spiders. being the spiders were in gear lube for quite some time, the odds of you getting them totally clean to make a good weld is slim as weld.
then when the spiders do let go, they are going to take that nice and expensive R&P set with it.

now if you have an offroad truck, weld away.

    You want to sell it????

I know there are car faster than mine, with more power.........

But I have my car camed diffrent than most, Know that I fixed it, I have tons of TQ down low, and for me my race is won with the 60fts.

I just upgreaded to the M&H 28in tall drags and the best I was able to get was a 1.66 60 FT and that was off ideal and SLOWLY giveing it gas, I would love to be able to stall her up, or punch it harder but she never hooks, tired all the tricks, air ........

Im sure I will have to get the 28in tall slicks from Hossier, but there has to be away to hit harder off the line.

On the street, Im sick of my cars rear end jumping side to side depeding on wich tire currenitly has trackshion.

Adanac Charger, I stugle with tracshion daily on the street, haveing my rear all over the place in the rain is no new thing for me.

    I ant Scarred,

I my M109R Bullavard is my daily driver anyway.

I ran a spool on the street for a month or so. Then I broke an axle after backng out of the driveway. Got another Moser axle and broke it again. I finally wised up and swapped in a detroit locker.

Just curious why do you think welding it up is gonna help you that much with traction?

yes but there is a bit of difference between having your rear end kick side to side as you are trying to drive then there is having a spin out while taking a turn, or hav the car turn 90 degrees as you try to leave a stop light.

i know its a truck with mud tires, but this was a common occurences with my K5 when i first got it that the previous owner "installed". a locker can even be squirrelly on the street in the rain if you dont pay attention.
