Been reasing a lot about new valvebodies and such for the 5speeds that make the lx transmissions not suck.
is there anything that will help the 4speed?

I sure hope BuilderBill chimes in, if anyone knows what can be done its him.

sloppy as heck.
trans never seems to know what gear to be in, but i think it's because you always seem to find it mid-shift. shifts are slooooooooow. smooth but real slow. you can stab the throttle and let go quickly, and the engine will rev up as if in neutral. gives an idea how slow the shifts really are.
There are some really bad dead spots partly because of the gear ratios but the shifting is a whole other story. My car shifts nice and hard now that Mike Lafrad did my CMR tune but overall its just inconsistent and sometimes it does shift slow and sloppy. As far as the dead spots, the shift point from 1st and 2nd happens right around 35mph but the tranny seems to get confused sometimes. In some instances if you go WOT in that speed range it will downshift to first and you have that nice passing power and it launches real hard. Other times I'll floor it in that same range and it will just sit there and bog and never downshift. Also I think the most infamous issue is the bounce. At freeway speeds 65-70mph if you go WOT and its a particularly hard shift sometimes it almost acts like its bouncing into the gear and you can hear the RPM fluctuate for a second. Overall my biggest complaint is just lack of consistency. Sometimes the shifts are real firm and quick other times they are slow and just drags into the gear, other times it does that bounce.
This is the 42RLE btw. From everything I have found to read about it there really isnt much to upgrade without just swapping for the NAG1.

Lol the 3.5 guys are going to hate me, but I couldnt resist a little throwback fun. The best upgrade for a 4 speed is a 5speed.
is a 5speed swap possible? except the trans what's needed?
