    Converters. Who's using what?

I am in the planning stages of getting a converter. I know what a few of the faster guys are running but would like to hear what other people are going with such as brand & stall. Streetability? Vendors who offer them? People that have switched brands of converters and why.Thanks.

Thanks for the quick response Scott. I was thinking of the 3000 Edge. How do you think that one would do on the street? Think there would a big difference between the 2800 & 3000?

What are ya hoping to gain ST? In general, I don't think you'll love a converter on the street. On the track, for sure! But if you've never driven a high staller around town, you might want to find a buddy with one first. Ask 'em to let you test drive and see whats what. Its a very different experience, and not all together positive from what I've heard daily drivers say.

I pretty much need one with the cam setup I am using. It's not a daily driver so streetability isn't really a huge issue. Just want to know what/if it is streetable.

Gotcha. I don't mean to mislead ya; hell I drive my 3200 PI (3500 actual) around every day with no problems. They're perfectly streetable, if ya know what you're in for.

To answer your original question, I've currently got a Precision Industries 3200 installed and running fine. I'm pretty sure I've got one of two they made that haven't blown up. Prior to this I ran (and still have if you want to buy a used one) a ProTorque 2800 unit. Pulled it when we were diagnosing an issue that turned out not to be related to the converter at all.

    Yup I agree with Jason,Takes a little getting used to.IMO a 2800 is a great all around T/C..
Im not sure how much different there is with 2800 or 3000..I would get with a T/C builder
and discuss your cam with them. They will be able to tell you what will work best with your application. There is such a thing as too much stall..Matter of fact when building a custom converter
a builder usually will ask about cam and engine upgrades, cam specs, gears, and the weight of the car.

ive done a few converter installs. 2800 Precision industries converter (in hemiwagn's) and a 2800 Protorque (in Jaak's). both cars make quite similar power, both have completely different feel now that they have two seperate converters. i highly recommend the pro-torque converters. it could be that the PI converter is faulty, or was mislabelled, but it has a much higher stall around town, feels more like a 3500 stall but actually stalls out at 2800-3000. the Pro-torque feels quite stock until the throttle is mashed, then it shows it is a high stall converter. i like this. both however have a snowmobile like feel in cold weather (sub 40*) until the converter warms up. even a stock converter can feel that way if its cold enough.

i have yet to drive an edge equipped car, so i'd like to see how they compare. the other's i've installed were a few years back, and cant remember the brands off the top of my head.

the slight "numb" feel you get when the converter hasnt hit it's stall speed yet.

    Gary,
    I have the 3000 edge.

You can take it for a drive Saturday.

    I can't tell the difference.
if Tony didn't give me back the original TC I would have thought He didn't change them.

With it Eric was able to do 1.70 60' at Atco rental then I followed that up with a 1.76.

    I have much to learn.
It takes a lot of practice at the track.
RIP nhDave - Never forgotten, my friend

They do their job; they slip. So lets say you're at a light and it goes green. You take your foot off the brake and hit the gas to casually accelerate to the next intersection. With the stocker, you'll move relative to your increase in RPM. With a higher stall converter, you'll quite literally sit there at the light until your RPMs get to a point where the converter can start to grab and move the car. You might be at 1500 or even 2k before you start to roll with any umph, where with the stocker you start to roll just off idle.

    Make sense?

I'm getting an Edge 3000 for my 392 Stroker, and Stu said I would hardly notice the difference... If it drives around town as sluggish as you say CV, I won't like it... except at the track I'm sure. I like throttle response, but it sounds like you have to get used to it.

Well I have zero experience with an Edge unit, so it could be completely different. But both the PT and PI units I've used responded similarily to what I've described.

And keep in mind too, what I talked about can be considered a pre-adjustment of your driving habits behavior. For me, I learned to 'flash' the converter a bit. In other words, I'll automatically give more throttle now than I ever did before, to help the converter lock a bit. Then I'll back off and accelerate almost like stock. It just took a little relearning on my part. Wouldn't take you long to adjust either I think.
