    3.23 gear vs 3.55 gear on a 426 Stroker

    Well today we were able to tested out a set of 3.23 gear on the 426 Charger. The same Charger which had did some testing with the 3.55 gear we put the 3.23 in.

    The first couple of runs were staged against my 426 stock gear again for comparison. We both are using 28 inch tall M&H DRs

    The 60 fts remained about the same as he able to maintain the low 1.6X 60 fts.
    The 1/4 mph did improve by an average of 3mph. The car shifted into 4th gear as it passed the 1/4 mark.

    A couple of the passes the 3.23 geared 426 and the 3.06 had the exact same mph but there was a slight ET difference. My 300 had the quicker ET.

    IMO with the 3.55 gear you can feel the launch. With the 3.23 it felt no difference in the launch then stock.


    My best of the day with the 3.23 geared Charger was a 1.61 60ft and a 11.53 @ 117

    My best of the day with stock geared 3.06 300 was a 1.67 60ft and a 11.53 @ 121.75

    Great trap by your car! Kicked that Charger's ass.

    Those gears are killing trap speeds. But really working on the first couple hundred feet.

    I'm eager to see the 3.55 results. I bet they really kill the trap and won't make much diff to the big inch torque motors.

    good report James! Doing some data collecting of my own on the smaller end of the spectrum.
    No doubt the tall gears can put you back in your seat. I assume these are Al's cars? Can't wait to see them run at Atco

    I seriously doubt that the 3.55 will work out W/stock displacement N/A engines either.

    The shift to 4th way before the traps will kill acceleration even more on the lower TQ applications.

    As far as the short game? One of the first tricks to improve acceleration on stock 74" or even big inch Harleys was to go with a taller/lower numericly/higher 1st gear ratio. (244:1, or 2.60:1) The stock stump puller low gear on the old 74s would not allow enough speed in low gear before the shift to 2nd. I think the 3.55 are in the same boat here. W/the 3.58:1 low gear ratio in our transmissions, the 3.55 just winds out too quickly.

    Now, if we could change those 1st & 2nd gear ratios to make them close ratio in 1st through 3rd gear, then we could run 3.90, 4.10, 4.33 or 4.56 gears enabling us to get the most out of 4 gears in the 1/4 mile. Those axle ratios in 4th would corrospond roughly to the 2.82, 2.93, (not an available ratio @ this time) 3.06 & 3.23 axle ratios axle ratios in 3rd gear.

    Something on the order of 2.80:1 for 1st & 2.00:1 for 2nd. That would give you about a 40% ratio change in all the shifts from 1st to 4th gear.

    The 2.80:1 low W/3.90 axle ratio would net a FDR about the same as a 3.06 W/ our current 3.58:1 1st gear ratio.

    A 2.80:1 1st gear W/a 4.10 axle ratio would net about the same FDR as a 3.23 W/our 3.58:1 low gear.

    As a side note: That 3.06 is a pretty darned good ratio for big inch N/A or power adder stock displacement applications.

    "Tall" gears have traditionally meant the same as "high" gears, lower nemericly.

    "Steep" or "short" gears have traditionally meant the same as "low" or numercly high gears.

    This is from 50 years or more of gearhead history.

    I can tell you guys that with my Paramount 8.8 rear with 3.23 gears I'm shifting at 6400 RPM which brings me about 150-200 ft short of the line with the MTCM installed... Without the MTCM installed I shift exactly at the line. I'm running 28" DR's as well. I just have to remember to hold 3rd gear through the traps which brings my RPM's to 6600.

    Your 8.8 is in powder coat currently.
    I revised the breather tube location on the next batch to eliminate the oil running up the tube.

    Well since I still am using the B&G I believe at 6400 with the rev limiter at 7K

    Al's car flat lines at 5600 but it should be shifting at the normal stock shift points.
