    Your Favorite Base

    List your favorite assignment.

Mine is my current one: Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan. I am on my second tour here. I did 4 years here, went to Hickam AFB, then I had a chance to come back so I did. My total time here on this base is almost 6 years.

My all-time favorite was my first base -- Loring AFB, ME. We were stationed there from Dec 1982 to Oct 1988. I was heartbroken when they closed it down -- we had always hoped to retire up there.

I had a real good time in Albany, GA when the Navy had the base there to support the RA5C Vigilante - mmmm southern women!

Now the -worst- one was the USS John F.Kennedy CVA-67 - where I spent 3 years, 9 months 22 days and 4 hours of seagoing fun. Highest retention rate in the fleet at the time, only way off was to retire, die, ship over or get out. "Sailors belong on Ships, and Ships belong at Sea".

Since the ones in Germany I was at are now closed, I guess Fort Carson, CO is my top spot.

Spent two years at Ramstein as my first perm duty station... nice, except I had to go off base to have a beer the first few months... I was only 17, not old enough to get served at the Club...

My Fav was Gila Bend Air Force Auxillary Field. It was a detachment from Luke, now Barry Goldwater Range... 300 military at the time and millions of acres of desert Conus isolated tour back then too, but only 70 miles from Phoenix. It was GREAT

Worst place to be? Grissom... the Air Force leases the place from the Navy, was a KC-135 base in the middle of a corn field... YUC!

Ramstein is a great place, but I was in such a terrible unit that it ruined the experience.

My favorite assignment was at Kelly because the unit and people that I worked with there were awesome!
