Thumbs up Vets eat free at Applebees on Veterans Day

This was emailed to me. Applebee's did this last year and are offering it again. I think this is a great thing that they are doing. If you go, make sure you let them know how you feel about them supporting the troops.

    FROM THE USO

In recognition of your service to our country, all veterans and active duty
military personnel are invited to eat free at Applebee's Neighborhood Grill
& Bar Restaurants this Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009.

As you may recall, Applebee's launched a pilot program last year on Veterans
Day offering free entrees to military service personnel and veterans.
Because the response was so overwhelmingly positive, Applebee's is extending
the invitation throughout the country this year.

We would appreciate your help in spreading the word. Please help us share
details across your various communication channels.

    • *All U.S. veterans and active duty military with proof of
    • current or former military service will eat free at all Applebee's
    • nationwide on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009.
    • *Proof of service includes: U.S. Uniform Services
    • Identification Card, U.S. Uniform Services Retired Identification Card,
    • Current Leave and Earnings Statement, Veterans Organization Card, photograph
    • in uniform or wearing uniform.

It may be a small touch but it's the thought that counts. I may have dinner plans on the 11th now.

Wonder if they know what a DD214 is?

Just another reason why I dislike the American Legion... they only allow membership from vets that were on active duty for at least one day during a conflict, yet ignore the hundreds of thousands of vets that served during the post Vietnam / Cold war era. They can only allow membership dates approved by congress is their excuse, but congress has traditionally approved all dates that they have requested.

I think their priorities are wrong and if you are a member you should let your leadership know. One day of active duty service, say getting a physical, on one of their approved dates shouldn't make someone more qualified to join, than someone that served over 4 years on active duty and two years in the active reserve.

This has nothing to do with the American Legion, but I understand your discontent, I am a member, but don't currently qualify for the VFW. Here are the AL's eligibility dates from their web site though:
    April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918 (World War I)
December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 (World War II)
    June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955 (Korean War)
    February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War)
    August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984 (Lebanon/Grenada)
    December 20, 1989 to January 31, 1990 (Panama)

Just got this info in an email from my Reserve unit...

That's pretty cool that Applebees is in on that now. I know when I was in there were a bunch of local restaraunts in the town I was stationed in (Columbus, MS) that offered free meals to the military on Veterans Day. A couple of them even gave us free beer too!!
