    Question for Illinois LEOs

    Officers-

I'm thinking ahead in the mod arena. I live in McHenry County, Illinois. I see so many guys on the forums here do things like: tint their windows, knowing it's illegal, then complain when they get a ticket. Makes no sense to me.

So I'm asking BEFORE I mod. Illinois officers (or ANYONE, if you want to post specific for your state here), can you clear up what's legal/illegal as far as:

    1. Halos (front) (i.e., colors, on while driving)
    2. HIDs (front)
    3. Halos (rear)
    4. Window tint (front side windows)
    5. Window tint (rear side & rear window).
Thanks for your help, and stay safe out there. I, for one, appreciate what you do.

There is a window tint bill on the Gov's desk that will make it legal for have 50% on the front windows, or 35% if the back windows are tinted. Right now there is no limit on the amount of tint, IF you have a medical excuse and window tint plates, (They start with the letters WT).

There is no limit on tint on rear or rear side windows.

I am not a LEO, or an attorney and I can't answer the other questions, but would imagine that colored halos on when driving would be an infraction fo some sort.

Thanks, Don. Not to hijack my own thread, but how are the repairs coming?

I just got a $250 ticket the other day for having my front side windows tinted. I had 35% on them and my car was parked while I was at work when I got the ticket. I had to remove the tint and I am going to send in pictures proving they were removed so I dont have to pay the fine. I like the idea of having a medical excuse with plates so I can have tint. Do I just go to the eye doctor and tell them I need a note or something? How can I get those plates?

Have to go to the Sec of State's drivers license facility and get a form. Your Doc has to fill it out. If you lie, its a $1000 fine

If the Gov doesn't veto the bill, it looks like the medical plates will go away.

    1. Halos (front) (i.e., colors, on while driving)White or amber is legal. Red, blue, green, purple, etc. is illegal. Put 'em on a separate switch.
    2. HIDs (front)Technically illegal, as it is no longer a DOT-approved installation. You'd have to really bust a cop's balls to get him to write that ticket though. Plus the Charger maintains a decent (not great) cutoff so it's not as in-your-mirror blinding as other cars. This one should be safe.
    3. Halos (rear)Since you're pretty much stuck w/ red due to the lens color, you're fine. Only red and amber illumination allowed in the rear.
    4. Window tint (front side windows) Don answered this. 50% is very light and not likely to be noticed. I have 20% and have paid 3 tickets.
    5. Window tint (rear side & rear window). Magnum you can paint 'em black if you want to. I think the Charger is different as it's not classified as a MPV (multi-purpose vehicle), it's just a regular passenger vehicle.
Thanks for your help, and stay safe out there. I, for one, appreciate what you do.

What state? $250 is steep! I beat one ticket by having the tint shop that installed the tint write me a receipt for having removed the tint for $20 cash. Took that to court, dismissed.

I guess by the most literal interpretation of the law, you have modified the headlight assembly and so it is no longer DOT approved.... but there's no way you'd ever get written for it. As long as they're off, you'll be fine.

    Updating my own thread...

I have amber halos and got pulled over tonight for driving with them on (written warning).

Officer said they looked red next to the "amber" marker lights.

I've driven by 10 officers without getting stopped since I had them installed a few weeks ago.

So the quick answer, for Illinois, at least, I guess, is "it depends." But you CAN get pulled over for them.

I would've said "but now you clearly can see that they are amber, not red". Amber is a legal color, no?
